Birth control is the practice of preventing unwanted reproduction. Before you skip over this, I want to draw your attention to an issue that many of you never would have considered before: male contraception. I know most of you may wonder, “what does this have to do with me and does it affect me? This is something that is usually taken care of by my girlfriend or by someone that I am in a relationship with.” This is why I want to let you know that before you get that phone call or make that doctor’s visit; I want to share some serious information with you. The vas deferens is the small tubes that transport the sperm cells from the testes. As stated by ScienceDaily, “it is composed of high molecular weight polymer powder dissolved in dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO), a biocompatible solvent.” (ScienceDaily) The resulting vasalgel implant remains in a soft gel-like state that allows water-soluble molecules to pass but not larger structures, such as spermatozoa. This quality is thought to be beneficial for preventing back-pressure on sperm storage areas.The contraceptive effect lasts for years, and, more importantly, is developed to be reversible by a second injection to dissolve the Vasalgel. For the most part, many of the tests have given positive results for Vasalgel’s effectiveness. Multiple clinical trials have shown varying effectiveness from 60 to 90 percent reduction of fertility in men, which is a positive number considering the fact that the only other temporary birth control for men is the condom -- not always 100 percent effective. According to a CNN article, the effectiveness of the shot works by increasing testosterone levels in the body causing the males pituitary gland to release less of the hormones needed to produce sperm.
