Birds Do It Taking Animals Art Skills Seriously Analysis
Have you ever read a piece of writing that instantly entices you, maybe even leading to disappointment when you finish because you wish it did not have to end so soon? Reading should be fun but, unfortunately, in college, many of the textbooks wouldn’t be considered an enjoyable read. Most articles in textbooks are strictly informative, rather than identifying and relating more to the academic level of the audience for which the book was designed. Over the past 30 years, the number of teens that read for pleasure has declined as much as 30%. Reading for pleasure is on the decline, with the amount of teens that say they hardly ever read for fun tripling in the last 30 years, according to a recent study by Times magazine (Alter). One hypothesis as to the cause of this decline is the possible failure of teachers/professors to assign quality academic articles which illustrate the essential parts of academic writing needed in order for students to grasp the concepts discussed.
The article “Birds Do It, Bees Do It: Taking Animals’ Art Skills Seriously” argues the thesis that “Today animal artists are not viewed so much as novelties but as sophisticated creators with skills and senses that can enhance projects in ways humans never can” (Cembalest). Cembalest states,

Unfortunately, Cembalest’s article, “Birds Do It, Bees Do It: Taking Animals’ Art Skills Seriously”, does not exemplify the high standard of writing needed to teach the strong writing skills needed by college students. The author fails to fully develop his ideas, does not use valid evidence and uses biased evidence to support the thesis. Although the article does flow nicely and provides plenty of anecdotal evidence, it needs some revising in order to make it appropriate for a college writing
