Biopsychosocial Model Essay
Define Health Health is defined by the World Health Organization as “a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (Taylor, 2015, p.3). Psychologists’ use this as their core conception of health. They don’t define it as the absence of illness. It is recognized as an achievement which involves balancing a person mental, physical and social well-being. It is referred to as the wellness of the optimum state of health. This is true because health psychologists focus on “health promotion and maintenance; prevention and treatment of illness; the etiology and correlates of health illness, and dysfunction; and the health care system and the formulation of health policy” (Taylor, 2015 p.3). A recourse for everyday living is health. It is not a resource of living but it is positive. It also emphasizes social and personal resources as well as the physical concept.

Its aim was to understand all the aspects which led to the development of specific medical conditions so that top level care could be provided. Engel wanted to emphasize the distance aspects of care such as “the patient; the patient’s social context; and the means in place for dealing with illness, namely doctors and the larger system of health care” (Saylor, 2015). The biopsychosocial model is idea that the mind and body works together to determine health and illness. It assumes that health and illness are consequences of the interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors. The biopsychosocial model thinks that biological, psychological, and social factors are important in determining health and illness.
