ALTERNATIVE PERSONAL STATEMENT – BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
The human body is fascinating. It is astounding the way in which we are beginning to understand how our own complex infrastructure works, including the composition and function of each individual cell and molecule. The variety of specialities within Biomedical Sciences, such as genetics and neuroscience, is one of the main reasons I chose this degree. The human body is an intelligent structure, it is intruiging the ways in which it can change and be affected. Through study I will gain a solid understanding of the human anatomy.
I enjoy studying Biology as I find the study of the body fascinating. During my AS year I won the 'Best in Biology' award for my theoretical academic poster based around sensitive teeth and nerve impulses. Chemistry helps to understand the world around me, the way things work and how molecules react and behave around one another. The amount of Biology and Chemistry within Biomedical Sciences really interests me, as it will help me to expand my learning within the subjects and their combined application to the subject. Mathematics challenges my problem solving skills and reinforces key method.
Securing a placement at a local NHS practice, I shadowed the work of four dentists. It was amazing to see the amount of great, broadened proficiency applied to each individual patient. Through observing procedures, such as root canal treatments and dental implants, I learnt the uses of different tools and materials. I found a great deal of satisfaction the way different surgeries and treatments made such a positive impact on the patient. What the patient does not see is the amount of preparation, organisation and hard work that goes into their treatment; from diagnosis until treatment, the dentist is there every step of the way.
