Hypothesis If a predator is restricted in forging range and has a limited food supply then the predator that is not limited will have a higher survivorship than that of the predator that is restricted.
a. H0: If a predator is restricted in forging range and has limited food supply, there will be no difference in survivorship as a predator who is not restricted. HA1: If a predator is restricted in forging rand and has a limited food supply then the predator that is restricted will have a higher survivorship than a predator that is not restricted.
HA2: If a predator is restricted in forging range and has a limited food supply then this predator that is restricted will have a lower survivorship than a predator that is not restricted.

Discussion: Our group simulation looked at survivorship of predators, who were spoons, and what happens if restrictions were placed on predators. One predator was restricted by a 1ft x 1ft square, or tile, where 50 prey, or beans, were placed inside the square with the predator. If the beans were pushed out of the square, the spoon(s) who were restricted would not be able to eat the bean because it was out of their forging range. On the outside, another 50 beans were placed for the spoons (predators) who were not restricted, these predators were allowed to eat both inside and outside of the square. After each 20 second round, the amount of prey captured for restricted and non-restricted were counted separately yo determine the amount both sides of predators would have in a 6 binding cap from the start.
Our groups results seemed very conclusive. We rejected our null hypothesis and accepted our HA1 hypothesis. By the end of the simulation, only one non-restricted predator was able to survive. The restricted predators already knew that because they were restricted they had to move fast before their prey was stolen while the

The simulation when all predators were present. The reason is because when predators, specifically starfish, are present the mussel population along with populations of all the rest are able to be controlled. This results in mussels not taking over using their competitive dominance allowing other prey to thrive so that the other predators can survive and be part of the ecological diversity.…

This relates to the principal of competitive exclusion because two species can not survive together in a permanent community if the have the same niches. There are many negative results that could occur if the interspecific competition is intense enough. The first and most drastic of the results would be complete extinction of one of the species because of lack of resources or lack of organization needed to get complete and full use of the resources that they are able to gather. Another result that could occur would be that the species that is becoming extinct from the battle for resources in that area would decide to move on but would then face the challenges of finding an area with shelter, nutrients, energy, and proper nesting areas. This scenario could also result in the extinction of the species if they fail to find proper shelter and…

    Optimal Foraging Theory

    • 138 Words
    • 1 Page

Changes in forage production may affect potential productivity of herbivore populations, especially in stochastic environments, which may alter the predictions set by general theories (Fulbright and Ortega-S 2006). Diets selected by herbivores are a function of the nutritional and chemical characteristics of forages, the herbivore’s nutritional requirements, and the time available to forage (Timmons et al. 2010). Optimal foraging theory predicts animals promote their fitness maximizing the net rate of energy gain through different foraging strategies (Hughes 1993). A premise in ungulate foraging theory is that as population density increases, resource competition increases, resulting in the depletion of palatable plant species (Pianka 1988).…
