Handmade Paper from Musa sapientum (banana) leaves
ABSTRACT
The main goal of this research is determine whether Musa Sapientum (banana) leaves can be another source of fiber for paper making by producing quality handmade paper out of Musa sapientum (banana) leaves. The banana leaves were gathered cut into small pieces and soaked in a basin full of water overnight. It underwent boiling in water, then in NaOH solution, and then lastly in soda ash solution to separate the cellulose fibers from the lignin and other extraneous components. The leaves were rinsed thoroughly and strained in between the boiling processes. It underwent pounding and beating with a mortar and pestle. The banana pulp was bleached with calcium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide, and was washed thoroughly to removed any trace of chemical. Three different treatments of handmade paper were produced with three replicates for each treatment. Non-standard physical test for folding endurance, tear factor, and tearing astreghnt were done on each treatment of the handmade paper produced. Qualitative descriptions were assigned to each treatment in terms of the paper’s color, writability and texture. Banana leaves can produced 70.2 pulp based on the result. Paper from treatment 2 which has 120g banana pulp, 25g gelatin composition gave the best result in folding endurance, tear factor and color. All paper samples had no difference with respect to texture, writability and tearing strength.

This gave me a much more solid understanding for the process of papermaking. The paper itself is made from the fibers of a species of Ficus tree, called Amate in Yukatek, and coated with a fine layer of lime plaster. To make this paper, first bark from trees is collected, torn into small bits, and then soaked over a period of time to soften the bark for when it is turned into pulp. Once the pulp reaches the desired level it is rinsed with clean water and then kept in water until it is processed. The pulp is then arranged onto boards and beaten into a thin flat paper. The paper is then taken to dry, which could have taken anywhere from two hours to two days depending on the…

Paper is made from either virgin or recycled paper pulp [1] which is extracted from wood or fiber crops. They are sometimes bleached during the production process to make the color whiter.[2] It is not uncommon for rolls of paper towels to include intricate colored images on each square (such as flowers or teddy bears). Resin size is used to improve the wet strength.[1] Patterns of shapes such as circles or diamonds are often imprinted into the paper towels to help it hold moisture.[2] Manufacturers use the pattern of the material, microscopic spaces within the pattern, and a type of cellulose in the fibers in order to maximize absorption. Most rolls are manufactured with two layers of paper, but different types can have more layers. They are classified by their key properties such as strength, absorbency, weight, and thickness. Paper towels are packed individually and sold as stacks, or are held on a continuous roll. Colored paper towels were introduced 30 years ago[when?] and come in two distinct classes, domestic and institutional.[citation needed]…

I’m looking at how paper has been used in art, and the ways it has changed between 1936 and 2012. I have chosen to look at Henri Matisse and Marc Hagan-Guirey and how they have both used paper. Matisse created a series of work simply entitled Paper Cuts and I am going to look at Two Dancers or in French Figure de ballet avec deux danseurs (See Figure 1). He created this paper cut in 1936. I’ve chosen to compare Matisse’s work with Marc Hagan-Guirey’s Horrogami series, whilst looking more in depth at The Addams Family Mansion (See Figure 2) from 2012.…

An association of paper historians based in Britain has estimated that there are 20,000 identifiable uses of paper in the world today. One traditional papermaker, P.H. Glatfelter Co. of Pennsylvania, redefined itself 15 years ago by concentrating its efforts on niche markets. Today it makes, by its own reckoning, paper for 1,000 different commercial products, including U.S. postage stamps, Twinings tea bags, Hallmark greeting cards, Bicycle playing cards, Band-Aid bandage components, Carlsberg and Heineken beer labels, and Reese's Peanut Butter Cup wrappers.…

The researchers used the Jackfruit rind as an alternative handmade paper, because it contains similar components in ordinary paper. Paper contains raw materials containing three major components namely, Cellulose, Hemicellulose, and lignin. According to Swami, S. B. , et al (2012), the heartwood of jackfruit on analysis yields (59%) Cellulose that is similar in the main component that contains an ordinary paper. These factors are the basis of the researchers in creating handmade paper from jackfruit peelings. In line with Rachtanapun, P. et al(2012) that durian rind is a good source of Cellulose fiber even though some part of the durian is not edible that’s why some of the part are being thrown or somewhat being burn up, that may only increase…

Non-biodegradable waste is a major concern everywhere in the world. The bulk of the world’s waste consists of the hard-to-breakdown products, such as styrofoam. Styrofoam is commonly used as food container in fast food restaurants. Because it cannot be recycled, this particular waste contributes largely to the world’s increasing garbage problem. To lessen this environmental problem, one logical solution is to use biodegradable materials or recyclable ones. Paper is being reconsidered and encouraged for use. This material can be recycled over and over again. However, trees still need to be cut for paper production. This spells trouble for the already depleted forests. Because of this, the researchers thought of an alternative. This alternative uses cogon grass for making the pulp and the paper. Cogon grass is found abundantly in many places and is sometimes considered a nuisance. In this study, we are trying to prove that the Cogon grass can be useful as an alternative in making paper.…
