"Clark.... Delacroix"
"There goes my old man." Mrs. Delacroix said. She held her breath while her husband went forward.
"Dunbar," Mr. Summers said, and Mrs. Dunbar went steadily to the box while one of the women said.
"Go on. Janey," and another said, "There she goes."
"We're next." Mrs. Graves said. She watched while Mr. Graves came around from the side of the box, greeted Mr. Summers gravely and selected a slip of paper from the box. By now, all through the crowd there were men holding the small folded papers in their large hand. turning them over and over nervously
Mrs. Dunbar and her two sons stood together, Mrs. Dunbar holding the slip of paper.
"Harburt.... Hutchinson."
"Get up there, Bill," Mrs. Hutchinson said. and the people near her laughed.
"Jones."
"They do say," Mr. Adams said to Old Man Warner, who stood next to him, "that over in the north village they're talking of giving up the lottery."
Old Man Warner snorted. "Pack of crazy fools," he said. "Listening to the young folks, nothing's good enough for them. Next thing you know, they'll be wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody work any more, live hat way for a while. Used to be a saying about 'Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.' First thing you know, we'd all be eating stewed chickweed and acorns. There's always been a lottery," he added petulantly. "Bad enough to see young Joe Summers up there joking with everybody."
"Some places have already quit lotteries." Mrs. Adams said.
"Nothing but trouble in that," Old Man Warner said stoutly. "Pack of young

The only reason the townsfolk would still be doing ‘The Lottery’ is because it’s a tradition. The villagers and their ancestors have been stoning their neighbors ever since the village was established. Sure the people of the village could disband the tradition that is ‘The Lottery’, but then they would also be losing a tradition.…

Most small towns have their own special tradition. Nokomis, Illinois has a Homecoming carnival the second weekend in July every year, Witt has Labor Day, and Hillsboro has Old Settlers. These events bring the community together in celebration. However, in Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery on July 27th the community does not gather for a celebration; instead they gather nervously awaiting the yearly tradition of “The Lottery”. In this village members of the community draw slips of paper from an old worn wooden box to determine who will be sacrificed for the greater good of the village. It is suggested in the story that the sacrifice is for the growth of the corn. The ritual of the lottery has been going on for so long that the majority of people don’t know why they continue the tradition or its origin; the community only knows that they always have.…

Hutchinson. She forgot the date and realized a little late, what that date meant. Mrs. Hutchinson’s fate seems to go hand and hand with her lateness. This symbolism feels like a morbid omen for Mrs. Hutchinson. Her lateness makes the reader think about her more than some of the other characters mentioned in this story. Furthermore, when Old Man Warner states that the younger generations adverse views of the lottery will make them want to “go back to living in caves,” (139) shows that Old Man Warner views the lottery as necessary for prosperity. He goes on to mention that there was once a saying, “Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon,” (139). This symbolizes the fact that the villagers sacrifice one of their own family members or neighbors in order to gain opulence amongst the village, as if this is the only way that the villagers can survive, without living in a…

Someone mentions to him that in the village up north they’re talking of giving up the lottery, but Old-Man-Warner quickly shoots that idea down calling them crazy adding that soon “they’ll be wanting to go back and live in caves”. That statement is interesting because in his mind it uncivilized to stop the lottery. Old-Man-Warner continues to say that there used to be a saying “Lottery in June corn be heavy soon” and he doesn’t think it’ll be worth giving it up to eat “chickweed and acorns”. Even when Mrs. Adams points out “some places have already quit lotteries” Mr. Warner, says in a resolute manner that they’re a “pack of young fools”. Old-Man-Warner is very stuck in his ways, as people even suggest new ideas about stopping the lottery he quickly calls them fools and naïve. It’s clear that he believes that the comfortable lifestyle that they have is because of the lottery and it keeps society progressing, and without it they wouldn’t be in the same place…

“The original paraphernalia for the lottery had been lost long ago, and the black box now resting on the stool had been put into use even before Old Man Warner, the oldest man in town, was born. Mr. Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box, but no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box.” (5) A black box on square town is placed yearly to raffle the lives of the villagers as a symbol of dominance. The winner will be stone to death by the villagers, family members also take part on it; they are submitted by the hierarchy dictators who implement rituals in order to achieve their needs, which is corn. Mr. Summers recites “Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon”? since he is one of the oldest villagers in square town who want to keep traditions just in the old days, intact. The lottery sound as a rewarding price to those who are unaware of the real cause[the outsiders], the villagers have somewhat an innocence in inherent evil death. “The lottery was conducted – as were the square dances, the teen club, the Halloween program – by Mr. Summers, who had time and energy to devote to civic activities.” (4) The ritual is projected to the people at a young age so that they become accustom and free of guilt when the time of execution comes."It's not the way it used to be." Old Man Warner said clearly. "People…

We stayed on my Grandfathers (Grandtom) properties when in Cape May. He had a large Victorian house (called 909) for him and my Grandmother (Granddot) and their guests and next door was a smaller but still grand Victorian house (called 907) for his children and their families and friends- that is where I stayed. There was a tennis court behind GrandToms house and a large garage with a one bedroom apartment above behind…

Today is my twenty third lottery. My mother was chosen in the third lottery I ever attended. I never really new her, but people say she was a great person. Ever since I learned of her being stoned because of the lottery, I have been protesting against the lottery. Even though I am against the lottery I still have to attend, because if I don't, the other villagers will choose me automatically. Three years ago, when I was twenty, Old Man Warner was chosen in the lottery. It's ironic how people change right before they die. He was one of the only ones that kept the tradition alive, but in the end he was yelling about how all of this wasn't right, how the crops would be fruitful even if he wasn't sacrificed.…

Off the shores of the Atlantic Coast in South Carolina, was a man by the name of Jeremiah. Jeremiah was a very shy, but adventurous man. In addition to doing small cleaning duties at the local market, he loved to explore the ocean. Jeremiah didn’t have a stable income, but when he saved enough he bought himself some scuba gear. To him that was his second job. He always found exciting valuables on the oceans floor, such as old artifacts, which he kept. He also would find many jewels such as gold, rubies and sapphires. Having not much of an interest in jewelry, he sold them cheap to the local jewelry store. Although, there was one gem he always wished he could have; Theresa Stone, the jewelry store owner. Her eyes gleamed like the morning sun. She had the body of an Olympic Goddess. Her hair was smooth like rabbit’s fur. She had it all going for her. But Jeremiah, so madly in love, was always too star struck to make a move.…
