Bingo Night Reflection
For the past 10 years, I have been a member of the Busy Workers 4-H club along with holding the offices of Treasurer, Secretary, and currently President. Through 4-H I have been involved in a multitude of community activities. Every year my club and I hold an annual Bingo Night with the developmental disabilities home in our community; playing games and giving out prizes. Additionally every Christmas we sing Christmas Carols to the nursing home and then host a Christmas party for the residents. Furthermore, on my own, I have assisted with the Public Library’s Summer Food Program. During this program, I served lunch to the children, and then read books to them. This past summer I aided in tearing down an old community baseball field fence and

I’ve been involved with a organization called Klothe-a-Kid since 7th grade. It’s main purpose is to provide supplies to those in need in rural parts of Kentucky. Through it, I’ve been fortunate enough to work organizing and passing out clothes, school supplies, food, and more to my surrounding neighborhoods and counties. Since Klothe-a-Kid is a Christian-based service, I’ve also been fortunate enough to introduce several new people to my faith while meeting them through the monthly events KAK holds. I believe the reason I consider Klothe-a-Kid to be one of my most significant involvements in my community is because of the scope of which I am allowed to work. I am able to schedule new events in concord with the founder of KAK, for places which…

Each year in November I volunteer at The Basket Brigade. We assemble boxes full of food for the less fortunate to have for Thanksgiving/the holiday season. After assembling the boxes we each take 4-5 and deliver them to anyone who has requested them. This opportunity is very eye opening, it shows you how much a little kindness goes and how thankful people are that you care. I have also volunteered at Feed My Starving Children for the last few years. This organization allows you to help pack food to send to children across the…

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

The influence of power is greater than most people make think; power itself can either lift you or crush you. Before there is an opportunity to gain control of any or all situations, someone may not even realize how defenseless they are but the moment they finally have power, they feel unstoppable. The three stories, “King of The Bingo Game”, “Story of an Hour”, and “Gorilla, My Love”, explain how feeling helpless and powerless can make someone feel scared, act irrationally, or lose hope. Nevertheless, both the lack of or too much power can strip away our humanity.…

I’m a shy girl who’s up for a little challenge or anything new to give a shot. My friends don’t believe I’m a helpful person and they’re right but I honestly do. I always help an individual if they had drop items on the ground, I can’t just be a person that passes by and stares. One of my favorite clubs i’ve joined for the past three years in high school is Habitat for Humanity. It involves being outside which I enjoy whereas we build houses from scratch and also help families who needs a roof over their heads. It takes awhile to complete and I absolutely despite waiting, but worth it towards the end whenever it comes together.…

Slavery is indisputably one of the most impactful events in history that still resonates its effects today. This is shown evident in Ralph Ellison’s King of the Bingo Game, where the protagonist still feels the impacts of slavery even though he was not a slave. Throughout the text, the unnamed protagonist demonstrates the struggles of many blacks affected by slavery. He tries to change his fate with the bingo game, but realizes that he cannot change the course of his life that slavery had already set in stone for him.…

Since eighth grade I have volunteered regularly at Prodisee Pantry, a local food bank that gives out boxes of food every week. Prodisee was the first place I volunteered on my venture. Then I started to serve at my old middle school on Tuesdays, usually in the science department where I could offer the most assistance. From there I began leading a small group for middle schoolers at one of my churches on Wednesday nights. However, that was the extent of my service for the first two months of the year, but soon I did something completely new to remind me of the purpose of the 365…

This past summer I was part of the leadership staff at Camp Howard. I was a unit director for the 1st and 2nd graders who came to camp for the day. This unit consisted of 30 campers and 4 counselors whom I was in charge of. I am also the treasurer of the College of Democrats and I volunteer with multiple organizations. For example, I help students and community members register to vote and I work closely with the office of Lane County of Democrats. I volunteer with the National Society of Collegiate Scholars by holding toy drives for homeless shelters. Another service experience I've had is volunteering with the Sparrow Club in my hometown. The Sparrow Club helps…

With this group, I had the opportunity to go to the local Willa Gill Center and package CARE packages for the community. The CARE packages contained basic needs such as toothpaste and shampoo, and special items like nail polish and makeup. After we packaged everything, we were able to sort out clothing and cans that were going to be distributed the next day. Working behind the scenes and helping the workers prepare was very rewarding.…

During the events at the Harbor Interfaith Services, I tried myself in almost all possible activities that were offered there. Initially, I worked with boxes of documents sorting them out and proofreading the information provided in files. Then, I sorted out clothes selecting the appropriate ones and putting them in the right place. Afterwards, I was loading out trucks with food, sorting that food out, collecting it in the bags, and giving it to the incoming people. Additionally, I was guiding people how to get whatever they wanted to get and was tracking people if they followed the procedure of obtaining the necessary assistance in the correct way.…

Over the years, I have participated in many activities and roles in 4-H. I have been an active member of my club, where I was most recently the president and have also been the vice president, secretary, treasurer, and news reporter. In addition, I was in charge of our club's annual sub sale to raise money to help pay for member's project books, fair passes, and club fees. For our community service project, I helped make cookies for the local American Red Cross blood drive in the summer. This action helped our club become an honor club. Every year, I have received the Clover Honor Award, which is won only by completing a certain number of tasks for your age group, including mentoring a younger member, inviting a new member, doing a demonstration for the club, etc. Also, I am a 4th year camp counselor. To be selected, I had to fill out an application with all of my leadership skills and activities that would qualify me. Everyone that applies has to go through the interview process with the county 4-H leader. Once selected, we start planning for the June camp in January, from the overall theme to each individual workshop and activity. I am also a member of the Union County Jr. Fair Board, where we help run different events such as livestock shows and keep a record of the awards. We also prepare for the fair week by putting up gates, trash cans, exhibitor signs, etc. This past year, I was in charge of the sheep…

To get involved with the community this semester, I joined a group of Southeastern students that have been going to Dakota Park apartments for the past year and a half to do kids outreach on Saturdays. It was exciting to see how, as soon as the cars pulled up, the kids swarmed to the field in the middle of the apartments and were ready to play with anyone, even though they had never met many of us before. I am not an initially outgoing person, so it took me a while to gather my thoughts and decide what to do and where to go since there were kid…
