•Introduction: Begin with an interesting lead. Then name the two subjects you are comparing ("Holes" and Surviving the Applewhites) and end with a sentence that says something about the comparison. This last sentence is your thesis which will focus your essay, and which you will prove in your essay. An example might be: Although movies and books are very different media, the movie "Holes" and the book Surviving the Applewhites show how many similarities there can be.
Surviving the Applewhites and the movie Holes have

•Community - all the characters have to learn to live with one another
•Acceptance - the Applewhites give Jake a chance, despite his bad reputation. Jake also has to learn to live with the Applewhites, which isn't easy for him!
•Teamwork - everybody has to learn to work as a team in order for the production to run smoothly

First group of body paragraphs: Describe the things (points) you are comparing and contrasting, but only for the first subject (either "Holes" or Surviving the Applewhites). Be sure to use examples and details to support each of your points. Divide into appropriate paragraphs and give each paragraph a topic sentence. You might write a paragraph per point being compared and contrasted, or you may decide to write one paragraph for the points you are comparing and one for the points you are contrasting.
•Second group of body paragraphs: The next section must begin with a transition showing you are comparing the second subject to the first. Again, describe each of the points you are comparing and contrasting, but for the second subject only. For each comparison, use compare/contrast cue words such as like, similar to, also, unlike, on the other hand. Be sure to include examples and details that prove the similarities and/or differences.
•Conclusion: In the final paragraph, give a brief, general summary of the most important similarities and differences.
Point by point format:

•Introduction: Same as in the block

At the paragraph level, my compare and contrast essay exhibits control of an array of organizational strategies by writing about one specific subject and keeping only information relevant to my thesis, and organizing it making the paragraphs transition smoothly. Demonstrating understanding of essay structure in my compare and contrast essay was reached by creating and following an outline.
