Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926 in Monroeville Alabama. Lee was the youngest of four children born to Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Finch Lee. She studied law at Huntington College in 1944 to 1945, following in her father’s footsteps with her career choice. She then studied a year at Oxford University, followed by working as a reservation clerk with Eastern Air Lines and BOAC. Later she quit her position with the airline in order to concentrate on her writing. After rewriting her novel to make her short novel series into one book, To Kill A Mockingbird was published in 1960. In 1961 she wrote two articles that were published in Vogue and McCall’s magazine, “Love- In Other Words” and “Christmas To Me”. In June 1966, President Johnson named two people to the National Council of Arts, one of them being Harper Lee. Harper Lee has been one of the few famous authors that hasn’t had any talk shows or book signings. Harpers’s life seems like a secret to others. People believe her novel is an autobiography, and the only information she wants her readers to know about her.

She was known as a tomboy in her small town, and was the youngest of her three siblings. Her father was active in the community, but her mother stayed at home of a mental illness. Sharing many similarities and differences, Lee and Truman Capote were close childhood friends. After developing an interest in literature, Lee graduated high school and attended Huntingdon College. She then struggled as working for Eastern Airlines and BOAC. Lee was reunited with Capote and befriended Michael Brown. Lee quit her job to pursue full time writing, and was supported for a year by Brown. Lee assisted Capote with The New Yorker and his first nonfiction story. In 1960, Lee finally finished her first novel, To Kill A Mockingbird. Lee’s award winning novel was selected by the Book-of the-Month-Club and the Literary Guide. A screen play was written about the book, and won four of the eight Academy Award nominations. In the mid-1960s, Lee was working on her second novel, which was never published. Avoiding anything to do with her popular novel, Harper Lee presently lives a secluded life in New York City and Monroeville.
