Id’s right before your eyes

The world is a place that is corrupted. “Id” has been here for as long as the first species people walked the earth. An example of id in our world can be displayed as the following events: “ The 9-11 attack on the twin towers”, “The shooting at columbine”, “World war 1”, and even “The Trojan War”. There are so many events that have happened, and that are even happening today that are “Id” elements. “Id” is driven behind many things, starting with greed.

On december 6, 2013, 52 year old, Joe horton, a salvation army bell ringer was charged for stealing $1k from a donation bucket, and attempted to use a ladies credit card which he found and later tried to use for himself. He was later charged with misdemeanor theft and identity theft, this is a clear example of id in our world. The bell ringer committed a greedy act because he wanted money for himself, and for his own selfish needs. him stealing the money showed that he didn’t care about the people that the donation was supposed to benefit, and on top of that he wanted to steal more money because he was frantically trying to get onto the ladies account, in order to take her money. In the book lord of the flies when Jack and his tribe find out that there fire is no longer Thomas--2

After snatching Piggy's glasses, the boys created a fire using the wood and leaves that they collected in a pile. At first, the fire was meant to create smoke so that the boys could signal a ship for help. Then it started to become a wildfire once the boys could not control the fire and were excited "at the power set free below them." (44) At first, the fire was meant for a good purpose but grew into something the boys did not plan for in the beginning. Destruction. I say beginning because when near the end of the book, Jack and his hunters decide to use the fire as a way of getting Ralph out of the forest so that they could basically kill him. "The fire was a big one and the drum-roll that he thought was left so far behind was nearer." (197) Ralph thought the destruction that the fire would cause would be over, but it ended up making a reappearance near the end of the…

The fire also engages the boys, driving them to become pliable to Jack’s leadership and follow his actions. In the light of the fire, the boys chant “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!” (152) while attacking Simon. This signifies the boys’ energy that, without a proper outlet, leads them to blind violence. As with the boys, the flames behave “as though they were a kind of wild life,” (41) which inspires passion and energy but encourages a chaotic state which the boys revert to. The red colors emitting from the flames entices the boys to make irrational decisions. The scarlet light washes away their humanity, pushing it into the shadows, leaving only the most depraved reactions. This imperious behavior puts the fire into the position of being seen as the master of the island. By stealing Piggy’s glasses, and by extension the womb of the fire, Jack and his tribe effectively shift the power from one end of the island to the other. When he gains possession of the fire, Jack reveals a tyrannical state of fire. Under Jack’s influence, the fire and the boys become insatiable and vicious, as opposed to Ralph’s more domesticated and beneficial fire and group. Ralph realizes the fire’s overwhelming control and…

Jack, the leader of the hunters on the island and one of the most power hungry boys on the island, finally snaps as Piggy presses him, smacking him, causing Piggy’s glasses to fly off and skid across the rocks, shattering one of the lenses. As the lens is broken, the readers can begin to see that the boys are losing hope and the sight to who they once were. Later on, after Jack makes his own tribe in an attempt to become the main chief on the island, he steals Piggy’s glasses, and William uses this as a symbol that the boy’s innocence is starting to be taken away from them as they spend more time on the island.…

For example, at one of their first meetings, the boys decide that they "can't have everybody talking at once" and that they "have to have 'Hands up' like at school." (Pg. 36). However, after some time, the hunters become more concerned with slaughtering a pig than with being rescued and returning to civilization. When they return from a successful hunt in the jungle, Ralph and Piggy try to explain to the hunters that having meat for their meals is not as important as keeping the signal fire burning. In a following fight, Jack knocks Piggy's specs from his face, smashing one of the lenses against the mountain rocks and greatly impairing his vision (pg. 75, 78). Finally, after Jack forms his own tribe of savages, Piggy's specs are stolen, leaving him nearly blind (pg. 154). Meanwhile, Jack returns to Castle Rock, "trotting steadily, exulting in his achievement," as he has practically abandoned Ralph and his civilized life (pg.…

In Freud’s theory the id represents the primitive part of the brain that only considers its wants and desires. In the “Lord of the Flies” Jack acts as the id because he acts childlike and only does what he wants without thinking of the consequences. When Ralph wants to build shelters, all Jack cares about is going and killing a pig. Jack doesn’t care about what would best benefit the group such as getting rescued or building shelters. He only cares about his obsessions such as getting power and killing. Jack exclaims “We can light the fire again.”(58) Instead of keeping the fire going so they could be rescued, Jack goes and hunts a pig. Jack continues to be childish and doesn’t take responsibilities for his actions. When the fire goes out Jack doesn’t admit that what he did was bad. Instead, Jack says that finding meat was more important to the group than getting rescued. In fact, Jack ultimately turns into a savage from not following the rules. The book describes “They were bright blue, eyes that in this frustration seemed bolting and nearly mad.”(39) Jack doesn’t follow the rules of society like he did at home, so while on the island he slowly turns more…

After Jack let out the fire during their chance of rescue, it “was too bitter for Piggy, who forgot his timidity in the agony of his loss. He began to cry out, shrilly: ‘You and your blood, Jack Merridew! You and your hunting! We might have gone home--’” (Golding 67). Piggy is sensible and mainly looks at the long term goal of being rescued instead of just focusing on just his desires and needs like Jack does. He tries to tell Jack how bad letting the fire out was, and make him feel guilty for it and understand the importance of the fire. However later in the book, after Jack steals Piggy’s glasses, he says "What you goin' to do, Ralph? This is jus' talk without deciding. I want my glasses." (Golding 173). Piggy is willing to take a big risk and march into Jack’s camp without even thinking twice. Here, he is not violent or savage like how Jack became but is still in the Id because he follows his reckless desire to get his glasses back. Just like the Superego, Piggy tries to carry out the instinctual moral good, but sometimes, he can still slip into the impulsive Id.…

Moss, Joyce and George Wilson. “Overview: ‘The Necklace’.” Literature and Its Times: Profiles of 300 Notable Literary Works and the Historical Events that Influenced Them. Vol. 2: Civil Wars to Frontier Societies (1800-1880s). Joyce Moss’ “Overview: ‘The Necklace’” is a brief article and it tells the story of the Parisian life in the 1800s. The article describes the life of the society and the limitation on women’s lives during the time “The Necklace” by de Maupassant was written. Moss’ article analyzes de Maupassant’s views of women and their place in society at that time. Most importantly, Moss emphasized on how Parisian society treated and bordered women from men - not giving women rights nor acknowledging them. According to Moss, in the 1800s “men recognize only one right in women: the right to please.” This statement shows Moss’s views on how men viewed women as property, lower-situated than themselves and unequal members of the Parisian society at that time. The key concept of the article is the connection between women and their social status; this is being accomplished by bringing the importance of jewelry in women’s life; jewelry as a symbol and sign of social and financial status. Women in that era sought jewelry as a way to classify their status to the public. The reader is told that women followed a certain trend, which in other terms meant finding a husband who was wealthy. Moss writes: “jewels were a widespread symbol...by a diamond necklace.” By this, Moss explains that bourgeois status was upheld if a woman owned a diamond necklace. Even though women were devalued in this era, a social status amongst society and other families of wealth could be reached once the woman found a man to provide for her and buy her expensive clothing and jewelry which could be afforded only by the wealthy; thus – securing a certain social status for…
