Bias in writing Writing has many goals. Those goals can be to inform or persuade the reader. The key here is to be objective. Complete objectivity is not possible because bias is inevitable. Bias is when a person prefers an idea and he or she does not give an equal chance to another idea. By not giving the opposing idea a chance, the topic is being clouded. Bias can occur when certain language or stereotyping or one sided opinions are used to convey a message to the reader. The reader would get influenced by those words and he or she would come to the same conclusion as the writer instead coming up with their own opinion from an unbiased piece of writing. There are many types of biases, some examples are stereotyping and over-generalizing, name calling and slanted language and evidence. Even though bias is not avoidable, writers can try to write carefully by being as natural as possible. One type of bias is stereotyping and over generalizing. This type of bias occurs when the author uses statements that indicate every member of one group is the same as one of it’s member. An example of this bias is if the author stated a comment such as “Most Muslim individuals are terrorists”. This is most definitely an incorrect statement. This type of statement will only imply a negative bias, which will lead to some readers assuming that this statement is correct. This negative bias will affect the Islamic community immensely and it might cause the equilibrium in society to favor towards out casting the Islamic community. Another type of bias is known as name calling. This type of bias is used when someone wants to indicate disapproval by using belittling, degrading, or negative names. By name calling, the author is creating a disapproving perception about the character. An example of name calling would be calling a certain politician, lousy, incompetent and a failure. This will only add to the readers thought process of determining how fit the politician is in running
