Abstract: This paper will address the best plan for helping Joe, an 8 year old 2nd grader meet the goals designed for him by his teacher. Joe receives Title 1 reading tutoring and I will focus on strategies for helping Joe meet each of his goals. Joe has the ability to meet each of the three goals set for him, but it will take time, consistency and some adjustments from his teachers and himself. The setting that is most suitable for Joe in this particular situation is setting A. by having the Title 1 teacher teach the lesson each day that Joe would miss from class enables Joe to still work on this assignment and work towards reaching his goals. One benefit of Title 1 reading is that the Title 1 teacher can make this the goal of the week for the other four children in the tutoring session as well. This could very well be an assignment that they that they could each benefit from and that way Joe is not disrupting the tutoring session by coming in late, nor is he left to try to figure it out on his own at home. Joe’s first goal is to increase the number of his written responses to reading. The two strategies that I feel are best suitable for helping Joe reach this goal are assignment appropriate tasks and modeling desired outcomes. Assigning appropriate tasks involves giving an assignment that is suitable for the students’ age, their background with the content, their level of motivation, the type of instruction, and the time provided to complete the assignment (Evertson & Poole). For Joe, the Title 1 teacher would be able to adjust this assignment for Joe and the other students as needed, based on their level of ability at this time. The Star sheet also states that you should, “Plan for individual adjustments to assignments as called for by IEP or 504 plans.” (Evertson & Poole). This is also a benefit

Literacy goals include decoding and building phonemic awareness, such as isolating letter sounds. He currently has an IEP in place under the label of speech and language…

Based on my pre-assessment, Katherine has yet to master the goals established on the IEP. This provides me with the opportunity to create four lessons to improve her comprehension and sequential skills. I will create two goals that will tackle reading comprehension and retelling the story. For each story, I will focus on her comprehension skills and the following day on retelling the story in sequential order. Katherine Prescott has an IEP plan that stipulates required accommodations for co-existing circumstances.…

The purpose of this assignment was to find a child in the primary grades and create a literacy profile based on an assessment. To best assess Landon’s reading level and literacy development I chose to conduct a reading record for him. Before conducting the assessment I had to get to know more about Landon and we had to get comfortable with each other. I began by conducting two interviews one with Landon to get to know more about him, and the second interview was with a parent. From the interviews I learned that Landon is in the first grade and he is in a literacy rich environment living with two educated parents. To help recommend books I asked him some questions about his hobbies and favorite things to do and he explained that he loves sports.…

Case# 64 Literacy: Reading Language Arts is a second grade Social Studies class. This class contains 23 students that are ages seven and eight. Diversity among the students varies greatly because of linguistic diversities, the range of abilities of the students, and the personalities of the students as a whole. Two students are English Language learners, one student has a diagnosis of Asperger’s, and one student receives services in speech. The teacher uses a Diagnostic Reading Assessment to attain the reading levels of the students within the class. The class scores on the DRA range from Level 4 (fall quarter first grade score) to level 38 (spring quarter third grade score). Using the information from the DRA, she noted four students reading scores fall below the second grade level, six reading scores are on the second grade level, and thirteen reading scores are above the second grade level. The information used for planning the lesson was academic abilities and challenges in attention. The plan for the Social Studies lesson is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., which fulfills the states standards for social studies, which is “Students will identify significant patriotic and historical songs, symbols, monuments, landmarks, and patriotic holidays; then explain…

At the beginning on the semester, there were three goals that were identified to achieve during our tutoring sessions. The first goal was to help Aiden gain confidence in reading and give him the support he needs. The second goal was for him to be able to identify sight words. The last goal was to work on reading fluency. Looking back at the goals that were placed, I do believe that the goals were realistic. However, I knew that I was not going to be able to complete the goals fully because we did not have enough time together to gain full mastery.…

When I began my tutoring sessions with Amira, she set a goal for herself of moving up a reading level and stated that she wanted to be a “good reader.” Meeting her goal by moving up to an independent level E by our final session made Amira proud. I also discussed the Goldilocks strategy with Amira, so that she knew how to pick appropriate books at her level. This was a familiar concept as her teacher had discussed this in Kindergarten. It was valuable to revisit the strategy as I needed to be sure Amira was choosing books which she could be successful in reading outside of our tutoring…

During the third meeting, it quickly became apparent that each committee member had a different interpretation of what constitutes an “outstanding” faculty member. The discussion was polite, but we debated the extent to which this was an award for teaching, or research, or service to the college, or scholarly textbook writing, or consulting, or service to society, or some other factor. After three hours, we agreed on five criteria that we would apply to independently rate each candidate using a five-point scale.…
