In Anton Chekov’s “The Lady with the Dog”, Chekov uses direct language along with slight descriptions to dictate the setting. However, the main purpose for the settings of Yalta and Moscow are to influence Gurov’s motives and feelings. The atmosphere that Gurov is open to is infectious. The locations of Yalta and Moscow represent two different ideologies in Gurov’s life. Yalta expands on the mischievousness and romantic aspects of Gurov while in Moscow the boring and mundane life of Gurov is exhibited. The location called S. is brief, but also entails a rebellious attitude. The plot overall is pushed forward by the chronological change in venue.…
In William Golding’s book Lord of The Flies Piggy would be a nerd. Typically a person that wears glasses is thought of as a nerd. In the book Golding says “And then looked up through thick spectacles.” (Golding, 7) Piggy is in the nerd clique. He has thick glasses which means he has horrible vision, which is typically associated with a nerd. A person who is a nerd will often pay attention to things most wont. “That little ‘un--gasped piggy--him with the mark on his face, i don’t see him--where is he now?” (Godling, 46) Piggy is the only character or boy in the book that noticed one of the smaller children was missing, and later declared dead. Generally a nerd is someone who gets picked on. “My specs! Howled Piggy. Give me my specs!” (Golding,…
I believe that Roald Dahl wants us to think Mrs. Maloney is a victim. I think this because in the story Mrs. Maloney looks to be a nice, kindhearted woman who is devoted to her husband, even though he would ignore her presence when she was speaking to him. "I think it's a shame," she said, "that when someone's been a policeman as long as you have, he still has to walk around all day long." He didn't answer. Although Mr. Maloney ignored his wife and was not interested in what Mrs. Maloney had to say she still continued to speak to him a respectful manner. When Mr. Maloney decided to tell Mary that he was leaving her for another woman she tried to deny his words in her mind. “And he told her. It didn't take long, four or five minutes at most, and she sat still through it all, watching…
On July 21, 1861 a four year war between the Northern and Southern United States began when the Confederate army invaded Fort Sumpter. However, this was not the beginning of Political differences between the Northern and Southern territories of the United States in a country doomed for Civil War. The election of 1860 was the first year the Republican Party ran against the Democratic Party for President. This was significant because the Republican Party was against slavery, and the Republican representative, Abraham Lincoln, became the sixteenth president. As a result, on December 20, 1860, South Carolina seceded from the union. Many events prior to the Civil War prove that it was America’s destiny, and that violence between abolitionists and slave owners would not stop without war.…
“Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is a remarkable book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1852 to against slavery. It steadily shows the evil and cruelty of the slavery from the frustrations of life of the main character, Uncle Tom. Tom is owned by 3 different masters totally. They are Arthur Shelby, Augustine St. Clare, and Simon Legree. Consequently, Tom’s pitiful life is caused by them.…
Uncle Tom’s Cabin was published after The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. The book was Stowe’s protest against not only to the Slave Act, but to the institution of slavery itself. Henceforth, within the book Stowe gives examples how there is no “good slave owner”, by pointing out the flaws St.Clair and Shelby possess in the act of keeping slaves, even though they are considered to be kind to their slaves. Explaining that there can’t be a good Christian person who owns slaves, since her target audience is mostly towards the religious north. Although throughout most of the book Stowe focuses on the story and not the reader, she would at times break the fourth wall to directly question the reader’s morals directly and address key points in the story…
Throughout the novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the role of faith is repeatedly portrayed in many of the main characters lives. It is often the crucial turning point for the characters’ lives, beliefs and morale during the course of the plot. “His spirit is, neither degrading stripes, nor blood, nor insults, can make the Christian’s last struggle less than glorious” (Stowe pg. 1182). This line struck a cord with me as it ties together the two fundamental themes of this novel: the obvious struggle of slaves to earn their freedom and the even more difficult task of remaining a morally and ethically devout Christian when nothing in the world gives you reason too. Christianity serves as a beacon of light and redemption for the characters in Uncle Tom’s Cabin…
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee teaches life lessons that show the unfairness of prejudice, the importance of dignity, and the need for respect. To Kill a Mockingbird is a book about the small town of Maycomb and two children named Scout and Jem. Scout and Jem's father is a lawyer assigned to defend a black man named Tom Robinson. Tom was charged with rape. Just because he is black Tom is found guilty.…
Patricia Cornwell, a famous writer, once said, that “I believe the root of all evil is the abuse of power”. To receive power in one’s life, they bring out strong emotions, such as fear or guilt to persuade the person to obey their commands. But, these people are simply exercising their power, and only have a relationship with them asymmetrically. The person will authority has the ability to limit the choices of another, and uses physically or psychologically pain only to pursue their goal. A person can rightfully deserve power, or obtain power by acting savagely. Either way, having authority in society can force people to act inhuman, and make people suffer dramatically. Similarly, in the article “Simulated prison in ‘71 Showed a Fine Line…
No matter which conditions they grow up in, almost all children and adolescents have someone that they want to be like. They have someone that inspires them and pushes them to do their best all the time so that one day; those children can achieve their dreams about becoming like their role model. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is an ideal role model to his children, Jem and Scout Finch. He is someone who shows them how to stand up for what you believe in, someone who teaches valuable lessons, and someone who treats everyone equally.…
Many people try not to make the same mistakes that their parents and grandparents did, whether it be a monetary, emotional, physical, or spiritual mistake, because their parents teach them during childhood. In The Hound of the Baskervilles, Henry doesn’t want to lose the mansion (and his life) like Sir Charles before him. People don’t want to lose their businesses or property the same way that their predecessors did before them. In And Then There Were None, everyone turns on each other in order to survive, but these characters are not good examples of normal people (as most of them have a few issues). A normal person tries to keep friendships. Descendants don’t want to break a friendship, so they learn from their parents and grandparents’ mistakes…
In Lord of the Flies, William Golding utilizes thunder as a herald of an impending victory for savagery. Golding employs the power of this roaring natural phenomenon as a subtle nod to how nature supports the savagery the boys begin to express. He does this through depicting the booming thunder immediately before events that revert the boys’ learned goodness.…
Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is a perfect example of how kids would act when placed on an uninhabited island with no guidance or rule. The views the children once had were beginning to be dramatically affected by their surroundings. In Chapter one “The children gave him the same obedience that they have given to the men with megaphones” (Golding 18). All of their previously known comforts and security’s are now being molded by the environment around them. Many things can change when the luxuries of living are taken away.…
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the plot is over a span of three years. This essay answers the question “What is the most valuable lesson that To Kill A Mockingbird teaches the reader?” To Kill A Mockingbird focuses on a county named Maycomb in Southern Alabama during the Great Depression. This book includes many racists and unpleasant comments to racially discriminate, and antagonize others. A majority of the folks in Maycomb county are selfish, arrogant and bias, however Atticus Finch is not one of those people.…
Roald Dahl, the author of the short story "Beware of the Dog" clearly exemplifies the modern, simplistically styled theme of not always being what you're told or what you hear. Peter, the main character overtime gradually comes to a realization that the Hospital he is staying at isn't what its meant to be perceived as. He thinks he is in Brighton, a town in England when really he is in France behind the enemy lines. The hospital nurse assures Peter saying,"'You're in Brighton'", however they were not in Brighton. He hears JU-88's in the morning, baffling him to some sort of conclusion that they were either to be bombed or that he wasn't where he believed he was. He questions the nurse about the JU-88's hoping for a reasonably realistic answer,…
