Best Friends: a Comparative Essay
Every person should have a best friend. I am lucky enough to have two! There exists a popular phrase, “dog is mans best friend,” and indeed my dog, Maxwell, is my best friend. Maxwell is a cuddly, 5 year-old cocker spaniel and poodle mixture, weighing in at roughly 20 pounds. In addition, a lovely lady by the name of Jenna Michelle also earns the “best friend” title in my life. Jenna is a 27 year-old goofy lady who has shown me solid friendship for the past three years. I spend a majority of my time with both of these delightful personalities, and they both provide similar friendship traits to me, yet in very different ways. This is the comparison of how I spend time with my two best friends, an adult woman and a furry canine. First and foremost, best friends communicate. Jenna and I are always talking throughout the day. Whether it is on the phone, via text message, through Facebook, sending each other photographs, or face-to-face conversing, we are constantly communicating. Jenna is usually my first English conversation of the day. We will catch up on what happened the night before or how a difficult test was in school. We gossip about people we know and tell each other stories and rumors that we heard. Jenna and I exchange ideas for our jewelry-making hobby. We brainstorm and share other craft ideas, reminding each other to add a particular idea to our “craft journal”. We bounce ideas off of each other and offer opinions and criticisms. We vent to one another when we are stressed, angry, or flustered, and simply call one another when we are just happy and feel the need to chat.
Maxwell and I also communicate constantly every day. Unlike Jenna and me, Maxwell and I don’t share a common language, yet we overcome the language barrier easily. Our communication relies on his response to inflections in my voice, body language, hand motions, verbal commands that Maxwell has learned and been trained to obey, and particular sounds, such as a whistle or click of my

Mans bestfriend is often used to describe our relationship with our pets, more specifically our dogs. Late last night my 15 year old chocolate Labrador pasted away, and shortly after his passing these two word came to me. However, I didn't welcome them with open arms. As I reflected on the many memories I had with him I thought to myself that this dog was never my friend... He was my FAMILY! You see I can't chalk up our 15 year relationship as a friendship, because that would be the biggest lie I've ever told myself. I loved this dog from the bottom of my heart and I know deep down there is nothing to fill the void I…

I believe it all starts with authentic communication which refers to communication that is open and free from pretense. We expect our closest friends to be authentic, or "real" with us. It is because we are connecting with their true selves and we ourselves are also able to be our truest selves with them inside the friendship. The primary and most important thing that authentic communicators do is always allow others to speak. Denying our closest friends the right to communicate authentically can lead to termination of the relationship. Being open in your…

This essay compares and contrasts two approaches for studying friendships between children: the approach in Bigelow and La Gaipa’s study (1975) and that taken by William Corsaro (1985). The former was one of the first studies of children’s friendships and involved in a first instance qualitative analysis of essays written by 240 boys and 240 girls about the distinguishing features of their best friends and in a second instance a content analysis approach. The latter was based on qualitative analysis of structured interviews and focused in the individual understanding of friendship. This essay will be structured around two perspectives on both approaches: the nature of data produced and challenges in application and interpretation, and underlying theory.…

My freshman year in high school, I decided to join Best Buddies. Best Buddies is a program where a high school student is paired with another student, who has an intellectual and developmental disability, in a one-to-one friendship. During my first year, I learned Best Buddies is not simply a club but a family. My second year of being a part of Best Buddies I began truly noticing a change in myself. Sophomore year I was paired with a girl one year younger than me named Carrie. She and I have become best friends and have now been buddies for the past three years. As I interacted with Carrie these past years, I began to realize disabilities do not hold people back, but that we hold ourselves back. Despite Carrie’s misfortune, she wears a smile…

I believe that a dog is a man’s best friend. I have grown up with animals all my life, but my dogs have had the biggest impact on my life. All the dogs I’ve had have been special and different in their own way. Losing a dog is always the hardest part of owning a pet, but getting a new one is just as hard. The dogs that I have had the strongest bond with are my dogs Rocky and Rubie, but now just Rocky. Rocky is a black labrador retriever, who is nine years old. Along with Rocky we had his sister Rubie, and my uncle’s family had two of their brothers, Cliff and Norm, but now just Norm. It has been fun watching our dogs grow up and be able to stay together since they are siblings.…
