Detox baths are a popular way to attempt to eliminate toxins and pollutants from your body, according to lymphologist and massage therapist Susana L. Belen in her book, "Detox and Revitalize: The Holistic Guide for Renewing Your Body, Mind, and Spirit." Baths that might help to detox your body generally contain ingredients such as Epsom or other mineral salts, herbs and sodium bicarbonate.
HISTORY
Detox baths have been used throughout history as a way of purifying the body. According to naturopath Linda Page in her book, "Linda Page's Healthy Healing: A Guide to Self-Healing for Everyone," the ancient Romans and Greeks used detoxification baths to heal the body and remove impurities. Other cultures have used seaweed baths, mud and clay baths and steam baths to help remove toxins and promote overall physical and mental well-being.

FUNCTION
Detox baths use heat and steam, combined with various substances, such as seaweed, baking soda and salts, to detox your body and remove impurities. According to naturopath Timothy Brantley, hot baths using detoxifying ingredients such as Epsom salts or baking soda help to draw out impurities.
