Beowulf's Weaknesses
Imagine a world with a forest that is filled with darkness, with different twisted creatures, lethal ones, and only one can defeat them. Beowulf, the legendary hero of the Danes and the Geats. Yet, he has more to him than meets the eye. Beowulf is the equality between the light and the dark. He is not a perfect man with perfect abilities. He is short not tall like his father and uncle, he has rotten teeth like almost all the people did then, and his eyesight isn’t all the best because back when he was a child he was stung in the eyes by bees. He uses his disabilities to his advantage. His eyes see when others are looking. His short body makes him strong. His rotten teeth shows that he admits to his weaknesses. His strengths show when he is …show more content…
Hrothgar was the king. He has ruled with a kind heart and he loved to celebrate with his people all of their triumph. One night he had a dream, a dream of a shining hall of celebration and it was taller than the forest called the fen that stood next to the land of the Danes. Hrothgar demanded that the hall was to be built. When the hall was finished it Hrothgar christened it Hall Heorot. He invited all of the most noble men to the hall to a feast. They ate and drank, but when night fell everyone was asleep. Something crept out of the fen, it was smelly, it was Grendel. A beast that killed anything in a bloody fashion. It crept into the hall and killed everything except Hrothgar, his wife Wealtheow, and Unferth son of Ecglaf. The news of the slaughter reached the land of the Geats. There was a hero named Beowulf. Beowulf decided to go with ten men to the land of the Danes. He came with no sword and no plan. He waited in the night for Grendel. Grendel came and killed one of Beowulf’s men. Beowulf got ahold of Grendel’s arm and started to wrestle it. His hold on Grendel burned Grendel with light. Grendel writhed and tried to get away. His arm ripped out of his socket. Grendel later died of blood

To sum it all up, In Beowulf, Beowulf is an archetypal hero who ended up being corrupted by the fame and fortune that was gained while doing the Danes a favour and killing their monsters. Grendel is a man-eating demon that lives in the land of the Spear-Danes and attacks King Hrothgar's mead-hall, Heorot, every evening. The narrator of Beowulf claims that Grendel's motivation is hearing Hrothgar's bard sing songs about God's creation of the world, which rubs his demonic nature the wrong way. Whatever the reason, every night Grendel slaughters more Danes and feeds on their corpses after tearing them limb from limb. Although he can't be harmed by the blade of any edged weapon, Grendel finally meets his match when the Geatish warrior Beowulf takes him on in a wrestling match.…

In the story of Beowulf, by Seamus Heaney, the first antagonist is a monster named Grendel, who is a symbol to represent the fear of nightmares. At first sight the narrator describes the monster, “Then a powerful Demon, a prowler through the dark…” (86). Grendel is seen as a demon of the night, as he lurks across Heorot claiming his victims. The power he holds only fits his symbolism as a nightmare, and how he is feared from others by just the sight of him. The narrator explains the fear this monster reaps, “All were endangered, young and old/were hunted down by that dark death-shadow…” (159-160). This creature is a fear, a nightmare, and a demon because of his creeping of sleep and silent attacking. Our worst fears are usually things that…

The great monster Grendel was the powerful warrior 's first opponent in battle. Grendel was a ravager of a hall by the name of Heorot and was seen as a demon frowned upon by God himself. The great hall of the Danes had long been plagued by Grendel, who carried off the people in groups of about 30. Thus, it was Beowulf 's purpose to conquer the great ravager of the Danes. Before their famed clash, Beowulf declared that he would not fight Grendel with any weapon of man, for the fiend would not be using any of his own, in the intention to create a fair fight. Beowulf caught Grendel by surprise as the monster was visiting the hall one final time. The guardian of the hall gripped Grendel so tightly that the demon was instantly stuck…

In the epic Beowulf, the people (known as the Danes) value a few things way over other things. The things they value the most is glory, fame, and the mead hall; called a “herot”. In the epic, there is a demon like monster that lives in the darkness of the land. Its name is Grendel. Grendel is against everything the Danes love, including the mead hall, and things such as fun and happiness. It pains him to see and hear people having fun. So to enact his revenge, in the night, he sneaks up to the herot, and he swiftly takes 30 men in their sleep. The men were never seen again, and when their companions woke up, they were filled with sorrow over their losses, and Grendel is relieved. He continues this act of killing off these men until Hrothgar, the king, banishes anybody from ever setting foot in the herot again. “That shadow of death hunted in the darkness, stalked Hrothgar’s warriors, old and young, lying in waiting, hidden in mist, invisibly following them from the edge of the marsh, always there, unseen. So mankind’s enemy continued his crimes, killing as often as he could,”…

I have chosen the ` Beowulf is a great hero but a poor king` title for my final essay, as heroism is a central and reoccurring theme in the Beowulf epic. Beowulf is presented as a strong, loyal and courageous heroic character in the poem. Much of Beowulf is dedicated to exemplifying and symbolizing the Germanic heroic code, which values characteristics such as strength, courage , loyalty and honor. “The heroic codes determined how a stately and noble person should perform in Germanic society, such as the one in which Beowulf takes place.” I chose this title because it is interesting and puzzling how Beowulf is depicted as a heroic and noble worrier but no so much a good king. Beowulf `s victories of defeating Grendel and his mother have gained him respect, loyalty and trust of others. His worrier skills and the good nature of his character has allowed him to rule the Geats for fifty years, however his skills as a king have failed him and his people when he is defeated by the dragon.…

Have you ever contemplated your reputation after death? A substantial societal principle during the era of "Beowulf" included a person’s notoriety after death. Hrothgar advises Beowulf to remain generous and selfless throughout life. He shows Beowulf what happens when somebody begins life with good deeds, then transforms into a narcissistic monarch much like King Heremod. Once King Heremod died, people remembered his self-centered acts rather than the generosity he showed when he ascended the throne. When a ruler makes a self-centered decision, the judgment voids his good deeds and taints his name after death. However, when a good king dies the people show their gratitude by creating an elaborate funeral. The people cremate the bodies and bury them with nonpareil treasures to show appreciation. The last survivor of a race states that when a person has nobody to share their gold and treasures with, their treasures have no meaning. By remaining generous, a person becomes well liked and their life has purpose. In order to live a commendable life and leave a meritorious reputation after death, one must remember to remain generous and selfless consistently throughout life.…
