Beowulf's Strength
Beowulf In Anglo-Saxon literature and culture, to be hero was to be a warrior. A hero had to be strong, courageous, brave, and loyal. Warriors had to be willing to face the odds of life or death. Beowulf is a great example of an Anglo-Saxon hero. The epic poem tells the story of Beowulf, a Geatish Warrior, and his battles with monsters. Beowulf had great inhuman strength. Beowulf is described as, “the strongest of the Geats—greater/And stronger than anyone anywhere in this world (lines 110-111).” When Beowulf arrives to see Hrogathr, he tells him of his many battles and successes. In his battle with Grendel, Beowulf demonstrates his strength as he rips Grendel’s arm off. “Higlac’s brave follower tearing at /His hands. The monster’s hatred …show more content…
To defeat Grendel, he was willing to give up his weapons and only use his two bear hands. Beowulf says, “Behind some broad linden shield: my hands/Alone shall fight for me, struggle for life /Against the monster” (lines 172-174). After Beowulf defeated Grendel and Grendel’s mother, Beowulf returned home and was crowned king for the next 50 years. Unfortunately, a fire-breathing dragon begins to terrorize the town of Geats. At such an old age, Beowulf was willing to battle the fire-breathing dragon. In the poem, he says, “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought / In endless battles. I am old, now, …show more content…
When Beowulf hears the news about Grendel, he and his men arrive to Herot to help King Hrogathr. After Beowulf’s presence, Hrogathr says, “you’ve come to us in friendship, and because / Of the reception your father found at our court” (lines 191-192). This shows why Beowulf came to help Hrogathr and his loyalty to him. This was a way for Beowulf to repay the debt from his father, Edgetho. Beowulf shows his loyalty as he comes back to defeat Grendel’s mother and the fire-breathing dragon. Near his dying days, Beowulf demonstrates loyalty when he “gave the golden/Necklace from around his throat to Wiglaf, /Gave him his gold-covered helmet, and his rings, /And his mail shirt, and ordered him to use them well” (lines 820-823). Being loyal was one of the characteristics that Anglo-Saxon warriors

Beowulf was known for being a warrior who preferred to fight a monster with his bare hands rather than with a weapon, yet it was not always his bare hands that would save him from death but rather his strong and reliable armor. Beowulf became the well known warrior that he was, owing to the fact that people believed that he was invincible and indestructible, however, it was his chain mail that he relied on to keep him alive. In the fight against Grendel’s mother, Beowulf would have never survived had it not been for “his woven war-corselet, wide and ornate” which would “safeguard his heart” (1275-1276). Grendel’s mother had the warrior in her grasp, clawing at him but she “failed to rip open the armor he wore” preventing his death (1330). Had Beowulf not worn the chain mail he would have been dead before he had the chance to kill Grendel’s mother and prove to the warriors who were “astonished to see him whole and unharmed” that he was the greatest warrior of their time (1434). When the warriors who had fled him saw Beowulf emerge from the water is when Beowulf became a significant member in the brotherhood, creating a greater sense of unity and strength amongst the men.…

Loyalty is his virtue throughout every battle he fights in. According to Marie Lazzari, “the loyalty within the war band was at the heart of Anglo-Saxon social organization” which exemplifies Beowulf’s Anglo Saxon ancestry. In the past, Beowulf's father, Ecgtheow, had needed assistance and Hrothgar had come to his aid. Beowulf comes to the aid of Hrothgar, because he feels devoted to the king due to what happened with his father. This set the stage for the loyalty Beowulf feels. Hrothgar says, ''Beowulf, you’ve come to us in friendship, and because Of the reception your father found at our court.'' (38-39) and shows Beowulf is aiming to do the same. It is crucial to him to do everything in his power and to devote himself to Hrothgar. Beowulf first shows his loyalty to Hrothgar when he agrees to help him rid the castle of the monster, Grendel, who has been terrorizing the mead hall for the past twelve years. Beowulf intends to defeat Grendel,…

The protagonist, Beowulf, is introduced to us in the poem as a young man with an eager sense of heroism-as is evident by his volunteering himself to help Hrothgar-complete with unparalleled strength. Therefore, his ultimate defeat of Grendel could be attributed to his physical strength. However, a force much more prominent than miraculous gifts of strength is an inbred sense of conquest that permeated the culture Beowulf lived in. Loyalty is one of the most important qualities a man can have, the Anglo-Saxons possessed this quality and kept it sacred. Beowulf's honor and loyalty saved Hrothgar country and his beloved people. "Nor have I see a mightier man-at-arms on this earth than the one standing here: unless I am mistaken , he is truly noble. This is no mere hanger - on in a herds armor." (244- 251) This quote is showing the loyalty Beowulf beholds and that the people cherish so much. Strength is one of the most important characteristics of a hero and Beowulf definitely exhibits this characteristic. When he landed on the Dane’s land he boasted to the King about his strength. Hero and Beowulf

The hero is an age-old concept that describes someone that will defend their honor to the end. In Beowulf, the author portrays the warrior Beowulf and his three battles in such a way as to clearly define what it means to be a hero. Fred Robinson and J. R. R. Tolkien addressed heroism in Beowulf regarding the warrior’s traits, as well as his battles and burial. The author of Beowulf defines the hero through Beowulf’s three battles with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. In this poem, each monster possesses a specific quality undesired by heroes. Beowulf battles anger/jealousy, vengeance, and greed/selfishness for the good of his Geat nation. As Beowulf fends off these anti-hero traits, he becomes capable of being a great leader of the Geats due to his divine piety – ultimately allowing him to be deified during his two burial ceremonies. Therefore, in Beowulf, the hero must utilize divine piety to overcome greed, vengeance, and jealousy in order to protect his nation.…
