Beowulf Vs Autrey
"Are 'heroes' more likely to have military background or be normal citizens?" I personally believe that heroes are more likely to have a military background than normal citizens. I think this because both Beowulf and Autrey had training in the military. By having this training they can analyse stressful and tense situations faster than people who haven't dealt with the type of events military groups have. In the story of Autrey rescuing Hollopeter on the subway tracks, Autrey said, "I had to make a split decision," he decided to jump on the tracks. The video it said all of this happened within seconds. There were other people watching, but Autrey was the one to jump down and save Hollopeter; I believe his navy background helped him choose

All throughout history there have been many different interpretations on what traits a real hero holds; the Anglo-Saxon era and modern day history seem to hold quite a few similarities. Beowulf, a definite characterization of the Anglo-Saxon idea of true heroism, can easily be compared to a modern-day lionheart: my grandfather. Both hold the basic principles of being significantly glorified, holding a high moral standing, and possessing integrity, strength, and responsibility when leading others. Both are incredibly influential and important to those around them.…

Glory and fame is important in a heroes mind. It’s more important than anything else in their life and territory. Respect and knowledge gained from their own people meant the world to them, and more important their identity as a warrior. Heroes do not have to persuade their story to their people and how they did it, the outcome of their war and victory would tell the story of how great and brilliant they were for it self. This explains the life of both Achilles and Beowulf. Both warriors fought with pride and power, but they had different personalities and ideas of leadership.…

Every world has a monster - each unique in their own way. They come from different beginnings, possess different traits, and have their own desires. However, they share one similarity: perception. Regardless of crime or victim, monsters are always perceived with paranoia and fear. Little to no consideration is paid to the emotional and mental states of these hell-bound creatures. Condemned for life, cursed by god, these beings spend their days pathetically wallowing in their shameful existence, scornful of the present and hateful of past. Grendel, a lonely monster who despises the world as much as it despises him, is one such being. Leaving the ill-fated waters of his pond, Grendel plagues the world of King Hrothgar and the Danes. Coming every night, Grendel massacres Hrothgar's people in the Herot, a famous hall of music and riches. This murder and terror continues until the arrival of Beowulf, a warrior with the intents of defeating Grendel once and for all. Courageously,…

To understand the famous Anglo- Saxon hero Beowulf, one must understand the culture that created Beowulf. The Anglo- Saxons were influential, strong, and loyal people. Research has found that, “the Anglo- Saxons arrived in Britain in about 449 A.D.”(BBC). This shows that Anglo- Saxon culture has had an influence on American history for a long duration of time because they are still discussed today. And were probably some of the first heroes that ever lived. This culture showed a great deal of braveness throughout their time. The men were put in many different situations, but their daring drive, and courageousness allowed them to persevere. According to the Germanic (Anglo Saxon) Warrior, “A glorious and courageous death was the only fitting end to a glorious life” (Hammack). This statement shows that the men took pride in fighting to protect their citizens, no matter what adversities came their way. It also shows that they had no fear and dying to save someone else, which was a very brave thing to do. Another characteristic displayed in Anglo- Saxon culture was loyalty. The warriors would never leave any of their comrades behind in battle. Hammack described this idea in this way:…

Although many of the ideals and values of the Germanic people and those of Roman descent were vastly different during the period when the Roman Empire was ending, both groups of people had some similar visions of how to live their lives. For example, as described in The Rule of St. Benedict and Beowulf, both the former Roman people and the Germanic people believed in some sort of immortality. While their ideas of immortality differed, both groups trusted that their lives, if lived a certain way, could lead them to attain a type of eternity after their deaths.…

Heroes did what they did for recognition. Beowulf did not travel all that way to merely risk his life out of the goodness of his heart. Not only is today’s definition of hero far different, it is thrown around too much. Anyone who potentially puts himself in harm’s way is called a hero, like a soldier who is deployed, but never performs an act of courage. In actuality, true heroes value others over themselves, and show that by deeds of sacrifice. A hero risks life and limb to help another survive. When one looks at the tragic events of 9/11 everybody was trying to flee the buildings, down the stairs. The heroes were the ones who went up, knowing that they might not even be coming back down. There is a story of the “man in the red bandana,” an office worker who used to a be a volunteer firefighter. While everyone was fleeing downwards he went up and helped about a dozen people to safety. Sadly, his life was lost that day but he knew that was a possibility when he chose to go up. His moral compass sent him…

The Beowulf Poet was most likely written by a Christian monk or influenced. There are three examples of the Christian philosophy shown in this poem: you can survive with the protection of God, all gifts are driven from God, and the proper attitude of man is to be humble and unselfish. The author also mentions God frequently in the epic. He also gives many allusions to the bible within the epic Beowulf. Before beginning to translate Beowulf, the translator must choose between a "heroic" or a modern style. "Heroic" means that the translation will use sentence structures and arhaic language. Modern translation style is very different: this type of translation uses contemporary language. Each style has its advantages and disadvantages. The use of modern language and sentence style makes the story easy to understand. An archaic style will more difficult to read. The first transcription of the poem was made by Icelandic scholar Grímur Jónsson Thorkelin in 1818. Two years…
