With Your Shield, or On It As it was demonstrated by the mighty Spartans in the movie, “300”, humans really are not concerned with the concept of life and death, as long as they live the way they want to live. In the movie, the men were dedicated to battle, and they used the phrase, “I will come back with my shield, or on it.” This quote literally implies that, if the men were to come back with their shield, it would mean they fought and were victorious. To come back on it meant that they paid the ultimate sacrifice and were killed by the consequences of war, only to be carried back on their shield by their comrades. Even thought the Spartans knew their death was inevitable at the time, that sure did not hurt their confidence and determination. To elaborate on the concept of life and death, the Spartan shield was heavy and made running difficult. If a Spartan were to run from the battle, he would have to drop his shield. Therefore, to come home without your shield would mean that you fled the battle and were disgraced. (Meyers) They would rather die in battle than to live and be considered dishonorable. Failure to them was not an option. However, the Spartans were not the only people to feel this way, for example Beowulf, Pat Tillman, and Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan from, “The Thirteenth Warrior” show these same characteristics and have little care for life and death, even if it is inevitable. To start off, Beowulf shows no fear towards death, as long as he completes his task in killing Grendel. At the time Beowulf was written, the idea of religion was just beginning to switch over from Paganism to Christianity. This is why there are an abundance of Christian allusions. However, the Christian life after death was not fully understood by Pagans. The Pagans did not really believe in life after death, only the things that were accomplished while alive so there was little fear of death. He would rather come back with

    Archetype In Beowulf

The plot in Beowulf follows the archetypal structure of a Hero overcoming all enemies until he meets his match but still dies a Hero: Beowulf defeats his enemies Grendel, then Grendel’s Mother, then must kill the dragon and in doing so, sacrifices his own life for his people. In true hero fashion, Beowulf fights the dragon alone, knowing he will die, “ he had scant regard for the dragon as a threat, no dread at all of its courage or strength, for he had kept going often in the past, through perils and ordeals of every sort, he had purged Hrothgar’s hall, triumphed in Heorot and beaten Grendel. He outgrappled the monster and his evil kin”. The quote outlines the Hero’s past triumphs and characteristically gallant outlook on the challenge ahead- the dragon Beowulf should fear, but does not. The archetypal plot structure transcends from the original to the translation, as it does through much literature in human…

Beowulf is an old English poem of heroism, and is noted as the most important piece of literature of that time period. The poem itself consists of over 3000 lines and was composed around the seventh century. The tale is of a heroic warrior that finds himself faced with danger several times during his life. The poem is very suspenseful, in that there are kings, dragons and demons that battle each other for power. During different parts of the poem, you are left to wonder, what is going to happen? Who is to be the victor in the battle? Will Beowulf become a legendary hero? The answer is, yes. Beowulf will be the victor, and along the way, prove what it means to be courageous, have strength, and most important of all, selflessly protect those around him.…

Fear was displayed in the story quit often. Beowulf knew that Grendal was not going to use any weapons. To make it fair Beowulf was also not going to use any weapons. “I’d use no sword, no weapon, if this beast could be killed without it, crushed to death like Grendal, gripped in my hands and turn limb by limb. But his death will be burning hot” (614-618). Beowulf was not scared of Grendal like many others were. He did not care if he died the same moment because he felt like he owed it to the King of the Danes. Like stated before Beowulf felt obligated to help the King of the Danes because of their past history, where the King of the Danes helped Beowulf. “And best of them that my duty was to go to the Danes’ Great King” (150-151). Beowulf wanted to help the King of the Danes because he said it was his duty. Beowulf was not afraid to do so; he just did…

    Beowulf Foolishness

After he had fought in many battles and saved the Danes from Grendel and Grendel's mother he was still not content. He battled the dragon, which was his greatest accomplishment, and proof of his courage and sheer heroism. Although it can be interpreted as a proof of courage, one could also look at it as foolishness, a man's selfish desire to gain glory, even after he has been saturated with it. However, the Anglo-Saxon concept of selfishness was far less abstruse than our own. Their idea of generosity was helping friends and allies, especially in form of gifts for chivalric acts. He did slay the dragon and Grendel partially because he wanted to protect the Danes and his own people from these two atrocities, but he was also motivated by a desire for glory. Beowulf himself was apathetic to the notion of death, he stated it many times throughout the poem, a fine example is his speech prior to fighting Grendel. However, he is obsessed with his legacy and his name, which is more important than life itself to him and the other Anglo-Saxons. For example, the slave in Beowulf's expedition to slay the dragon is not even in the headcount due to his lineage and…

Literary critics of Beowulf often criticize the poem for its lack of historical accuracy. The lens in which the poem is viewed engenders a view of the poem’s weaknesses and strengths. Many critics fail to think of the poem in a different perspective and thus fail to capture the literary value and strength the author put behind each line and stanza of the poem. J.R.R. Tolkien asserts his view that Beowulf should be criticized as a work of art and not as a historical piece of literature. Furthermore, Tolkien conveys that because of the literary flair the author of Beowulf included in the poem, the work should be considered one of the most successful poems of Old English. Tolkien takes into account the themes of youth and old age and the literary…

(Part B) Beowulf is an epic hero; he takes great pride in his actions, unlike Grendel who feels jealous of humans which causes him to be spiteful towards them: “ Grendel snatched at the first Geat / He came to (and) Ripped him apart” (313-314). Grendel’s pride lays in the fear he instills on humans, without pride Grendel would be a monster with no motive to kill. Furthermore, Beowulf’s pride stems…

In the epic Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf is depicted as a heroic figure who fights monsters and defends the weak. During its time, Beowulf would be considered a great hero however in today's standards Beowulf would only be considered a great warrior because a hero should value the lives of the people and not seek to be rewarded. Instead, Beowulf committed heroic acts for his own selfish reasons and never shows to values the lives of the people. From fighting Grendel to slaying the dragon, Beowulf only fought because he value the fame and fortune that comes along with those accomplishments.…
