Student athletes’ schedules are filled with sports and school work , with little to no time for anything else. They barely have any time to make money legally outside of school. Most college athletes do not have any money to spend on things such as late night snacks, movies or other inexpensive things and entertainment. Really the only student athletes that have additional money to spend are the ones whose parents are wealthy and could provide them with money to spend, however most kids are not that fortunate, which is why colleges should pay their student athletes. In high school, he was the salutatorian(second in his class) and graduated with a 4.2 GPA, while putting in the demanding hours required to be an elite athlete. He attended Stanford and continued his academic excellence, while maintaining that NFL prospect status. In an interview, Sherman was asked his stance on college athlete treatment: “While student athletes are being offered a free education, they do not have the time or enough opportunities to take advantage of that education. The NCAA manages everything in college sports, and is considered a non-profit organization, all of the money they make is redistributed to the colleges that are part of the NCAA. Just football, and basketball generates 6 billion dollars a year, and not one penny of that money would've been made if it were not for the student athletes. In "Pay To Play: Should College Athletes Be Paid?," Adele Birkenes and Akash Bagaria who have written six articles about student life states "It is only reasonable that student athletes have a share in the millions of dollars that their sports businesses bring in." The statements by the authors bring to light this one simple question, why can the athletes be rewarded for making the NCAA and colleges successful? Although paying college athletes is not an easy decision for the people in charge, many support paying student athletes. There has been many proposals dating back to the 1950's, but there are five proposals that have a very good chance of getting passed, and used. Should college athletes be paid actual cash for their contribution to the sport they participate in? Now I know a lot of people would argue that, “athletes do get paid, in scholarships”, but what about the big time D1 athletes that have their jersey’s being sold and being put on magazine covers? I mean some of these athletes we hear about daily are being publicized like celebrities. In Division 1 sports the big time conferences and schools have big time athletes that bring the universities they are playing for tons of money with their effort and time spend contributing to the athletic program they are partaking in. It’s hard enough to have a job as just a student, but being a student athlete there really is no time for extra money, which makes it very hard to live. I think this is where and why some programs pay players under the table, but being an athlete is a full time job and some kids have to support a family. I think if the NCAA could pay the athletes a bare minimum amount of money it would make that much of a difference.…

I strongly believe that college athletes shouldn’t be paid because they're still amateurs at the sport. They aren’t professionals at the sport. Even though their in college they are still learning and they need to pass school then start getting a job to make money. If you compare college amateurs to professionals there will be a big difference and observe why they get paid it will make a lot of sense. According to the text it says “A gentleman never competes for money,” Walter Camp wrote in his 1893 handbook on college sports.”…

Student athletes should be compensated for their work, as they are the sole reason for the Athletic Program’s surplus in revenue. These athletes are working for the schools and are doing a service to the college that seems to go unnoticed. Colleges are using these athletes to boost their respective reputations and bring in revenue while not compensating these athletes for their work. Everywhere else athletes are paid, so why shouldn’t college students too? Some critics may argue that these student-athletes are amateurs, and if paid then are becoming professional athletes. The minor league for baseball could be considered an amateur sport, although they do receive pay according to the team’s revenue.…

Paying college athletes has been a controversy for over a century, dating back to what is considered to be the first intercollegiate competition. Fact is college athletes want to get paid beyond a scholarship. Yes, scholarships pay for the student’s tuition, books, classes, living expenses, etc., but they have no money to buy clothes, pay for parking, food, etc. Expecting the players to get paid millions of dollars is obviously unrealistic, but paying them as if it was a full time job, at least minimum wage is adequate enough. For the 15 highest paid coaches in Division 1, together they bring in around $100,000,000 every year.…
