Language is the method of human communication, either spoken or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional way. English is a West Germanic language that was first spoken in England and is now the most widely used language in the world. In this 21st century, with the help of developing technology, English has been playing a major role in many sectors including medicine, engineering and education. In Malaysia, which is multiracial gives a priority to English as a second language.

In education, English language is playing main roles either to the teachers or students. As a student we must learn English, it’s because the medium of instructions at primary school until higher education institutes are in English. Furthermore, the exam questions and reference books are also in English language. In addition, anyone who interested in attending a university they need to speak and pass a test that proving that they fluent in English language. In Malaysia this test is known as Malaysian University English Test (MUET). Beside this, most of the universities in this country there are also international students. English language helps local students to communicate with them.

English is the primary language of business throughout the world. Most international business transactions, including emails, reports and contracts are written in English. Someone who has ability to speak fluently in English language have beneficial if they seeking job opportunity with international companies. They will move to the top of the competition because many corporations want to hire those with dual language ability.

Travel and tourism around the world is carried out in English, because it’s known as an international language. If we are planning a holiday tour to foreign country we’ll probably be speaking English. Many airports, banks, and hotels have English speaking staff and use English signs to guide us. We can mingle with the local people and can learn their culture and history too. It is to our advantage to have a basic understanding of how to communicate in English if we are traveling anywhere in the world.

An important benefit of English language is if we want to expand our knowledge in computers and technology, we must understand the English language. From that we can join the world on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. We also can enjoy with many entertainment and news options like movies and computer programs.

Speaking and understanding English can let a person more easily communicate with others and find more job opportunities not only in his or her home country, but around the world as well. There are a lot of benefits we will get if we put effort in learning English as a second language.
