I think the company would benefit from using intranets. Intranets are networks that connect all of the different departments together and allowing them to access company information. Sales and marketing would benefit from the use of intranets, by having access to information pertaining to what is selling and what is not. They could come up with a strategy to increase sales of these products plus those that are currently doing well in sales. They could also use this information to branch out into new market areas. Allowing them to access current production information would allow them to better alert vendors as to what needs to be sold faster. It will also allow for better inventory control, not only on production but with materials needed for production. Human resources would benefit from use of intranets as well. They would be better equipped to handle staffing needs. If scheduling overtime is needed it can be better project with access to production information. Human resources would also benefit greatly from the use of an intranet to determine if additional employees are required to meet production and manufacturing needs. The production and manufacturing departments will be better prepared to meet customer needs with access to sales and marketing information offered through the use of intranets. These departments work hand in hand to ensure item sold by the company are not sitting in inventory. In this way over stock of items is less likely to occur.…

From the article we can see that IT has the ability to provide competitive advantage for Lennox as an insurance company. The CIO had a plan to build a sophisticated computer aided system that will help the company to connect with many agents nationwide to organize business with their customers and bring success to the company. Lifexpress with the help of technology are going to use a simple laptop to develop financial profile of a customer, to identify and explore Lenox’s most appropriate policies, to conduct initial analysis, to compare the company’s details to know the requirement for a better strategy can be done easily using technology and also in less time. As the author said “A process that had taken anywhere from four to six weeks could now be completed in a few days or, in some instances, a matter of hours.” So using technology an insurance company can minimize their workload at the same time do it more efficiently. For example using technology a company can transform from being manual to automatic. The works, which were done manually could be done through technology and would have been more efficient and less time consuming. And by using technology we a company can remove the middle man from the whole process, for example in this company the CIO has to report to CFO and then the report eventually goes to CEO, so if technology is used here and a database is created, the report can directly go to CEO without the help of CFO. Through technology it becomes easier to have control on the workflow and keep track of progress. It is easier to communicate through technology, above that it becomes cheaper to run a company using technology as “it helps the firms in reducing the costs by eliminating the mail rooms, paper files as well as the data entry clerks.” Above all the most important thing for a company is its information and data, which is managed proficiently by using technology, it helps the company to store data, rate them and the company,…

Bill Gates, as Chairman of Microsoft, has been a leader of the information revolution for a quarter century now. He, in partnership with Paul Allen, founded Microsoft because they saw an opportunity to use a new technology to change the way business is done. They had a vision that computer technology could be used to benefit and transform society and, of course, the business world. I use the term business in a general sense. All aspects of modern human interaction use information technology to conduct the interaction. This is true of the business world, the non-profit world, the higher education world, and any other realm. As the increase in utility of information technology continues to rise, questions arise around cost/benefit issues. In practically any organization, large dollar amounts and large teams of personnel are utilized to facilitate the introduction and use of information technology into an organization. The questions that follow revolve around outcomes. Are we using the new resources appropriately? Are we getting our moneys worth? Bill Gates says we are not and suggests a new model he calls a digital nervous system as a way to maximize value from technology and information.…
