Behavioral Perspective: Classical And Operant Conditioning
The behavioral perspective that exemplifies how external environmental events condition our observable behavior. People and animals behave as they normal would everyday due to their environment and past experiences. Scientific methodology takes up a huge part in behaviorism and how studies can be objectively measured. Our environment and what we are faced with daily affects our observable behavior (aka our response). When it comes to the behavioral perspective, there are two types of conditioning: (1) classical conditioning and (2) operant conditioning. Classical conditioning is a process in learning by association and determining what our behavior is. Operant conditioning is the process of learning by consequence and rewards. I believe operant conditioning is seen more commonly today with the parenting style for kids and the obedience process of animals. If a child is punished for wrong-doing, they likely will not do that task again. But if they are never told right from wrong, they will continue doing things that are frowned-upon. Operant conditioning is a very good way for parents and pet owners to teach right from wrong. Classical conditioning is good for …show more content…
Also, environment takes a huge role in behavioral perspective as it does in our everyday lives. In life, everyone acts according to the type of person they grew up to be. Classical and operant conditioning help the development of children and animal (remember, we were all children at one point). How behavior is centered around everything we do. The other three perspectives are less important because they do not focus on how people are taught at a young age and do not directly involve how behavior can affect a person. Whether a person has a good or bad attitude can affect how they act and what tasks they preform. Behavior strives us to do what we do everyday depending on what our attitude

    Around the turn of the century, Edward Thorndike attempted to develop an objective experimental method for the mechanical problem solving ability of cats and dogs.     Benefits of the behavioral perspective include it being scientific. Often the behaviors studied are only ones that can be observed and manipulated from the outside. Because of this, you can compare behavior without having a biased view. Classical conditioning is another benefit of the behavioral perspective meaning we learn a “connection between an originally neutral stimulus and a naturally evoking stimulus that produces an automatic reflective reaction”. In layman’s terms, it is a pattern of stimuli and responses. Operant conditioning is also a benefit in which it is believed that reinforcements help an individual learn different behaviors. The use of reinforcements increases the likely hood of an individual doing that behavior again. Some of the shortcomings for the behavioral perspective include the perspective suggesting that behavior can be broken down to the same conditioning process no matter how complex. This implies that individuals are not unique but rather similar to each other. This perspective also usually focuses on only present which excludes possible underlying issues.
