Before We Were Free Literary Analysis
“All conflict in literature is, in its simplest form, a struggle between good and evil”-Anon. From what the reader can understand from previous knowledge (of reading literature) most conflicts are based on the fight between good and evil. For instance, in a book entitled Before we Were Free by Julia Alvarez, there is one main character name Anita, and her family, her mom, her dad, her sister- Lucinda all live in family compound with an American family called the Washburn’s (Has one daughter and on son). Anita’s family and the Washburn's live in the Dominican Republic. At the time the Dominican Republic was under a dictatorship by a ruler name Trujillo and was known as El Jefe. This dictatorship is currently over in the Dominican Republic, however in other parts of the world it is not over yet. Currently, North …show more content…
In the novel Anita’s Uncle (Tony) and her father are trying to overthrow El Jefe. Nowthis doesn’t go exactly as planned. Before all of this happened Lucinda (Anita’s sister) got flowers and a phone call from El Jefe which was considered to be dangerous because he was fond of younger girls. In light of this Lucinda felt frightened, henceforth her family decided that she should go to the United States for her own safety, which then later all her family joined her. Well, all- except her father. Anita’s and Lucinda's father and their uncle Tony proceed with the plan to overthrow El Jefe and they succeeded, although they died because of it. Along the way El Jefe has killed many innocent people. The quote can be tied into this because this is a classic conflict of good vs. evil.In this specific case El Jefe would be considered the evil and Anita’s and Lucinda’s father and uncle or anyone who was trying to overthrow him would be considered the good.     Critical code switching was the main focus of Ellen Moodie’s composition of El Salvador in the Aftermath of Peace: Crime, Uncertainty and the Transition to Democracy. This term surfaced after a peace agreement ended the civil war in El Salvador in 1992. When a civil war ends there is the common belief that all violence ends. However, this was not the case in El Salvador and violence continued after peace was supposedly established. In order to diverge the attention of continued violence within its country, El Salvador’s government sought to “re-label” the violence that was still present in its war-ridden country.
