Beetle Lab
The passalide, also known as the Bess beetle, are reported to be able to carry 30 times their weight. A scientist names Rodger Kram studies these beetles. But really how strong is the Bess beetle? Does beetle mass seem to affect a beetles pulling power? A way to observe this is by conducting an experiment to see how many pennies beetles of diverse masses can pull. If the beetle mass is related to the beetles pulling power, then a beetle with more mass will have a higher pulling power. Materials
Electronic balance
Bess Beetle
Petri dish
String
Pennies
Table
Paper

Methods
1. Draw and label the beetle
2. Find and record the mass of the petri dish by using an electronic balance
3. Find and record the mass of a penny
4. Place the beetle in the petri dish
5. Find the mass of the petri dish and the beetle combined
6. Tape a long piece of paper to the table. The beetle’s legs need friction on order to pull the pennies
7. Make a loop with the string and place between the thorax and abdomen of the beetle. Make sure to follow the teacher’s direction exactly.
8. Tape the opposite end of the string to the petri dish
9. Make an area of darkness because beetles prefer to be in the dark. They should pull the pennies in that direction because they like the dark
10. As the beetle is moving, add a penny one-by-one. Do this until the beetle can no longer pull
11. Find the total mass of the pennies the beetle could pull using the electronic balance.
12. Take the string off the beetle carefully. Return the beetle to its habitat
Independent variable- Group number or mass of the beetle
Dependent variable- How much mass it could pull
Controlled Variable- Health of bug, size of petri dish, how far to the darkness
Control Group- No control group

Moths that fly by day are not properly to be called moths; they do not excite that pleasant sense of dark autumn nights and ivy-blossom which the commonest yel- low-underwing asleep in the shadow of the curtain never fails to rouse in us. They are hybrid creatures, neither gay like butterflies nor somber like their own species. Nevertheless the present specimen, with his narrow hay-colored wings, fringed with a tassel of the same color, seemed to be content with life. It was a pleasant morning, mid-September, mild, benignant, yet with a keener breath than that of the summer months. The plough was already scoring the field oppo- site the window, and where the share had been, the earth was pressed flat and gleamed with moisture. Such vigor came rolling in from the fields and the down beyond that it was difficult to keep the eyes strictly turned upon the book. The rooks too were keeping one of their annual festivities; soaring round the tree tops until it looked as if a vast net with thousands of black knots in it had been cast up into the air; which, after a few moments sank slowly down upon the trees until every twig seemed to have a knot at the end of it. Then, suddenly, the net would be thrown into the air again in a wider circle this time, with the utmost clamor and vociferation, as though to be thrown into the air and settle slowly down upon the tree tops were a tremendously exciting experience.…

Our goal or task for our Rube Goldberg project was to feed the money pig. For our first step a ball rolled down an inclined plane and hit ten dominios. Then the dominios hit a marble for our second step. For our third step the marble rolled off a table and went through a funnel and triggered a mouse trap. In our fourth step the mouse trap went off and a popsicle stick fell off an inclined plane and made a golf ball to roll down it. For our fifth step the golf ball hit another ball on a table. In our sixth step the ball rolled off the table and hit a Jenga block. For our seventh step the Jenga block triggered beads to fall off the table. Then for our eighth step the beads triggered popsicle sticks to fall off an inclined plane. For our ninth…
