Beethoven’s 9th Symphony
Movement 1 Analysis
To assign the first movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony the sonata form would truly be a subjective judgment.I will first explain how this movement fits the sonata form; then I will discuss how it diverges from this form in rather fascinating ways.
Broadly speaking, the first movement can be divided into three pieces, each beginning with a version of what I have denoted A_0, the introduction to the piece in which motifs float around in a constant void, gaining energy, and morphing into musical themes. If we were to impose the sonata structure onto the piece, we would say that the three pieces are the exposition, development, and recapitulation. The exposition introduces two large thematic blocks separated by a transition that modulates this section from the tonic to the relative major.
The first thematic block is much easier to recognize as it is always preceded by
A_0, the introductory phrase. Moreover, A_1 is the most easily recognizable theme in the first movement; it emerges out of A_0 and is loudly played by the entire orchestra in unison.Although not all of A is homophonic, the melodic line is always clear throughout this section. In fact, Beethoven clearly wants to impress this theme in our memories.
Not only does he make it loud and clear, he also repeats it, with slight modifications the second time.
Beethoven then modulates from the tonic to the relative major key.The modulation happens quickly and is extremely subtle, almost hidden by the many series of ascending sequences written into both the transition in part B of the exposition.
Moreover, the transition and part B share many common characteristics, such as texture, tempo, and dynamic.Since the modulation happens so soon, perhaps the transition is meant to be very short and the five (or six) different themes following the modulation are the themes that compose part B.This makes sense time-wise as well,

The first movement of the composition begins with a solo from only the strings family. A soft, consistent melody is played and the violin dominates the other instruments in this piece. The tone color at the beginning of this piece is relatively light which symbolizes the characteristics of a nuturing mother. As expected from a classical piece, the dynamics of the piece suddenly change, and there is a slight crescendo in the piece during the following measures of the composition. The tempo of the composition grows quicker in pace which portrays another chapter in the story, signalizng another movement of the piece. A violinist them performs a solo that plays alot that is also quick, yet play alot on the concept of pitch. It can be heard that the violin goes from very low ranges to fairly high range in pitch to emphasize the great amount of emotion in the piece.…

Beethoven’s 9th symphony conducted by Leonard Bernstein is a truly sophisticated piece of art that takes you through a roller coaster ride of mixed emotions. Feelings of sorrow and fear throughout the piece are coated with affirmation, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and then Beethoven continues onto exploding your emotions using sounds that bring feelings of extreme proudness and accomplishment. This end of the journey is a magnificent chorale using a modified version of Schilling’s poem Ode to Joy.…

The second piece I am going to discuss is the Symphony No.2 in D Minor, Op. 36 composed by Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827). It was in the Classical period, and the genre of it is Symphony because of it had four movements. The first movement is in the Adagio molto form, the second movement is in the Larghetto form, the third movement is in the Scherzo: Allegro form which breaks the rule of most of symphonies, and the fourth movement is in the Allegro molto form. The length of the work is about thirty-five minutes and…

The music turns triumphant and joyful and is set at a happily content moderato tempo. A third theme is introduced during the coda which does little to tie the piece together for a conclusion, instead it provides a sense of confusion. Instruments seem to be conversing back and forth looking for which direction to go. A second recapitulation of the first theme clears up any uncertainty and brings the symphony to the ending it was searching for. The return of the original melody in its minor key provides a grim finality, punctuated by a few additional forte notes to give the piece an absolute feeling of…

The exposition starts out in F Major with a small two measure introduction, followed by Group 1 material. This is important because he uses the 16th note idea later in transitions between groups as well as the development. The first transition uses triplets as a means to modulate to C Major by using secondary dominants. It is also worth noting that the transitions between groups are exceptionally long. I believe this is to make up for the surprisingly short development section later in the piece. Group 2 comes into view, being in C Major for the rest of the exposition and by expounding on the 16th note idea. The Group 2 motive of quarter note triad followed by 16th note runs come back in the development. The next transition uses triplets again, but in a different fashion. He cuts the first note of every bar in the right hand while the left hand goes chromatically from E to A in place of the cut triplet notes. This small idea comes back briefly in the development. The next section is hard to describe. Some might say it is the closing theme, while others might say it is a precursor to the closing theme. I tend to think the latter. He could have ended it from the second transition to the little three bar closing theme just fine. I think he just added the precursor as a little fluff.…

The whole piece is under the shadow of the death, and the first movement sets the funereal tone for the whole work. The beginning is an introduction with fugal elegy subject, and then it followed with a ternary form. This movement is based on a main theme and some short themes that derived from the main theme, connected with the same motives, and number of short motives (composed of patterns of eighth and quarter notes) which are varied, fragmented, and combined with each other throughout this movement.…
