Purpose: The purpose of this Lab was to see how much pressure or stress the beet tissue would hold.

Hypothesis: I hypothesize that the higher % of the solvent that the higher the colour intensity will be shown on the ph colour scale. The lower the solvent then the less colour shown.

Materials:
*Test Tubes (4) *Cork Borer
*Beets
*Water
*1% Acetone
*50% Acetone
*1% Methanol
*50% Methanol

Procedure:

*Cut 4 uniform cylinders of beet using a cork borer with a 5-mm inside diameter. Trim each cylinder to 15-mm in length.
*Place these cylinders of beet tissues in a beaker and run tap water over then for 2 minutes to wash betacyanin from the injured cells on the surface.
*Discard the slightly coloured solution,

    In this lab, we are going to learn how the stress of temperature affects fresh beets. We have come to learn that cell membranes organize the chemical activities of cells. All cells are made of plasma membranes, often called fluid mosaics. It is sometimes described as a mosaic because it is made of protein molecules that are embedded into phospholipids. Phospholipids are the main structural support of the membrane and the proteins perform most of the functions of a membrane. Together they form boundaries or barriers between the cell itself and its surroundings, like the membrane of an egg. Plasma membranes also control what substances come in and out and also dispose of the cells waste. The membrane itself is composed primarily of phospholipids. Phospholipid molecules have two parts and form a sheet that has two layers, called a bi-layer. They are made up of two fatty acids which make up the tail end and the head is phosphate group. The head of this molecule is hydrophobic, which mean it is attracted to water and their tail is hydrophobic which means they dislike water. Together they form a bobby-pinned shaped barrier.     The dental formula is a convention used by mammalogists to determine the tooth number and tooth arrangements. The dental formula is calculated by counting the number of incisors, canines, premolars, and molars present in the upper jaw (one side) and counting the number of incisors, canines, premolars, and molars in the lower jaw (one side). The total number of incisors, canines, premolars, and molars (upper +lower jaw) multiplied by 2 would equal to the total number of teeth present in the mammal. The dental formulas for these three species: coyote (Canis latrans), deer (Odocoileus virginanus), and human (Homo sapien) are all different. The coyote had the dental formula of 3-1-4-2/3-1-4-2 (x2), which produced the total of 40 teeth. The deer had the dental formula of 0-0-3-3/3-1-3-3 (x2), which equaled to 32 teeth. The human species had a smaller number of teeth with the dental formula being 2-1-2-2/2-1-2-2 (x2), which produced a total of 28 teeth.
