‘’The thing that is really hard and really amazing, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself’’- Anna Quindlen Richard Rodriguez reflects on the complications of balancing life as a successful student and the life in a waged class family. As he matured, Richard was trying not to be perceived as the stereotypical student coming from an immigrant/working class family. In his early ages upon starting school, Richard knew how essential achieving an education was. His parents also understood how hard it was to get by with very little schooling, so they stressed the importance of education to their children early on. At the same time, found himself growing admiration towards his teachers more, because he felt that he can relate to them more and is aware of his interests. “A few minutes later, I heard my father speak to my teacher and felt ashamed of his labored, accented words...” “My teacher was so outspoken her words were edged sharp and clean...” (Rodriguez 19).
Afterwards, it has developed to the point where he started to lose his social skills. As he couldn’t communicate on a certain level with other children and family, Richard became self-conscious. In result, felt like an outsider, not enjoying life as he should. “Since the studies were put first before anything else, he was succeeding on a mental level.
