Beastie vs. Kids in Lord of the Flies
Ever hear someone saying, “There’s an elephant in the room.”? However everyone knows that the elephant symbolizes the nervous feeling in the atmosphere. This quote is well put in play in the book Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. In this book the little children stated that they saw a beastie in the woods at night. Jack and Ralph, the older kids, take this as a nightmare and tell the children to calm down. But, it’s pretty clear that the beastie is all the tense, scared, and nervous feeling building up within them. They all know its there, however none of the older kids want to admit it, because of their ego and want to be leader which shows a true case of man vs. beastie, or as in this case it could also be man vs. himself. Furthermore, the beastie is said to be an ever so big snakething(35) found in the woods by the boy with the mulberrycolored birthmark. Ralph seems to deny the spotting from the start as in: “You couldn’t have a beastie, a snakething, on an island this size,” Ralph explained kindly. “ You only get them in big countries, like Africa or India.” (36). Golding offers the reader some inklings about Ralph by this quotation. Ralph, wellbuilt, attractive, strong boy(10&11), and the other children believe that among themselves they need a person to be in charge, so an election took place: “Let’s have a vote.” “Yes!”... “Him with the shell.” “Ralph! Ralph!” “Let him be the chief with the trumpetthing.”(22); Ralph had won this selection and was chosen to be the head on this island, who will make the crucial decisions

and just hold everyone in place. By this Golding seems to be giving the impression of making Ralph a monarch; as we know, no monarchy has ever succeeded without obstacles within its way! Likewise, no leader is known to be scared even if he is. For example, if Obama said that he was scared then what kind of leader would he be? If he lost hope then the nation also

Life and people are full of diversity and courage; however, the unknown can make young vulnerable minds similar and fearful in their reactions. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, a group of once, young civilized English boys’ become fearful of an imagined beast. They fear a beast because of what they have let their imagination produce. Simon, on the other hand, knew the beast was all in their heads therefore he had nothing to be afraid of. As Piggy, Ralph and Jack are all sceptical, Simon remains true to his beliefs. In the story Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there are quotes in the story that help the reader understand what events are happening. Roger exemplifies all the negative human characteristics discussed by Thomas Hobbes. When Roger was introduced to the story, he appeared to be someone who would most likely be picked to be a leader, or “chief”. Thomas Hobbes mainly believed that “men cannot know good and evil, and in consequence can only live in peace together by subjection to the absolute power of a common master, and therefore there can be no peace between kings”. A great of example of Ralph is when Jack was introduced. There was a conflict because Jack also appeared to be a great representation of a leader. Although both characters compromised , there was still conflicts because two ‘testosterone-fueled’ children might not always have the skills to run a group together. “Ralph was annoyed and, for the moment, defeated. He felt himself facing something ungraspable. The eyes that looked so intently at him were without humor” (37).…

Through their quest of self-knowledge, both novels depict fear. In Lord of the Flies, Jack uses the beast to manipulate the other boys by creating the beast as his tribe’s greatest enemy, idol, and system of belief all together. "Maybe there is a beast . . . .maybe it's only us" (Golding 89). Jack uses the boy's’ fear of the to clear up his control of the group and the violence he causes. He sets up the beast as sort of like an idol to fuel the boy’s bloodlust and establish a cutted view of the hunt. The boy’s belief in the monster gives the novel religious whispers, for the boy’s different types of nightmares about monsters and beasts eventually take take form of the monster that they all believe in and fear.…

First of all, Golding demonstrates that adults place a nonexistent innocence on children through the controllability and power that fear has over humans. Fear is an impulse that all humans are born with. It lives inside of us and we can either choose to tame it or let it control us. However, if not tamed, fear can take over reason and take control. Golding demonstrates this in Lord of the Flies through Jack and Ralph’s characters. This is shown through Jack’s character because his fear of the beast takes control over him. During the feast on the beach, Jack begins chanting “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood” (Golding 168). The chanting grows louder and louder and later results in Simons death. When the littluns scream in fear because they see the beast coming from the jungle, the boys’ violent impulse is immediately revealed. “At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt on the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore” (Golding 169). Their fear of the beast takes control over them and without thinking, their first instinct is to kill the beast. Golding also demonstrates this through Ralph’s character. This is because although Ralph has control over fear in the beginning, he slowly lets it consume him. This is proven when the boys are reenacting the mock hunt. Ralph starts off as playing and pretending that Robert is the boar, however gets too…

The beas plays a huge role and is a imaginary fear from the start. Simon is the only boy who understands that they are all beasts inside. Meaning that he understood the evil witrhin each of them. Golding directly tells us that they are evil when The Lord of the Flies says “There isn’t anyone to help you. Only me. And I’m the Beast. . . . Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill! . . . You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close! I’m the reason why it’s no go? Why things are the way they are?”(158). When this is said all the evidence and clues come together to form the conclusion that the beast is the evil within us that cannot be take out or removed because it is apart of each and everyone of us. The Lord of the flies is a physical symbol of the beats however the boys’ behavior mentally brings the beast into existence. The beast makes the boys make rash decisions, act violently, and turn against one another, the death of simon is an example of this. Simons death was horrific and gruesome. Simon was injured and was crawling down the mountain, when he reached the bottom the boys started vigorously attacking him while shouting “ Kill the beast!Cut his troat! Spill his blood!”(168). They were so caught up in the chant and the fear of being killed first that they did not notice they were killing one of there own. Ironically simon was coming down to spread the word that the beast is not real and there is no need to fear it because the only beast they should fear is themselves because there is a beast inside each and every one of them. The “existence” of the beast has brought out the evil within them and turned them against one another. Golding has clearly proven his point that mankind is…

Since the hunters can accept indignity from a feeling of safety, they secure the pig’s head, who “grin[s] amusedly,” into the floor as “a gift” for the beast (Golding 151). From their beliefs in a leviathan or ghost upon the island, the boys accept savagery and believe they can physically kill their fear. Relying on superstitions, the hunters trust that the beast will accept the offering of a dead animal, yet issues remain due to the lack of understanding that their fear remains irrational. When a child witnesses the figure, the Lord of the Flies malevolently identifies itself as “the Beast” who remains the dark and evil “part” in all beings (Golding 143). As a physical form of mankind’s vileness, the head behaves derisively towards the children since they falsely believe that they possess no evil when killing peers and torturing creatures. The Lord of the Flies influences the children to accept their lack of innocence, yet their fear of accepting a inner savagery results in further damage to the island as the boys act recklessly. Ralph, escaping from his predators, encounters the pig’s “teeth grin[ning]” at him and holding his “gaze masterfully” and “effort[lessly]” (Golding 185). Evil residing in Ralph’s consciousness causes him to feel the entity with the everlasting grin, a reminding of his corruption in contrast from…

In the story Lord of the Flies, the theme, no one man should have all power, is conveyed. This theme can relate to modern day life all over the world. For example, the state of North Korea is terrible. The entire country is ruled by one man, Kim Jong il. It is a dictatorship, and life for everyone there is abominable. In the book Lord of the Flies life is similar. Ralph began as the dictator, having Jack as his main helper, but soon Jack revolted and tried to overthrow the chief. This is shown several times throughout the novel when Ralph and Jack, the main characters, fight over who should be chief, and argue about the biggest priorities, like keeping the fire going. The boys on the island become indecisive over who should be the ultimate ruler of the tribe, and if he should join him. Towards the end of the narrative, Ralph can be known as the only rational boy left on the island.…

Power is a central, continual theme within the novel, Lord of the Flies; both the nature and holder of power however, are constantly changing. The natural desire the characters have for power is made clear by Golding in the opening chapter of the novel, in which Ralph belittles Piggy in front of the other boys; after Piggy tells Ralph not to tell anybody his nickname, Ralph publicly announces that "He's not Fatty...his real name's Piggy!" (Golding, 1954, p. 23). This early gesture affirms Ralph's initial desire for power, as he is seeking attention in a way that many young boys would; this immaturity also highlights the themes of youth and innocence within the novel. It can be learned from the text that once power is…

In the book Lord of the Flies the beast, at first was nothing more than a product of the boys’ imagination. The beastie is briefly mentioned by the boy with the mulberry birthmark in chapter two. He talks about the “snake-like thing”, and calls it a beastie. Majority of the boys agree that there is a beast and even claim that they saw it. One of the Littluns described their dream of their supposed encounter with the beast “I saw something moving among the trees, something big and horrid.”(5.91) The boys were daunted and intimidated by the idea of a beast existing on the island. Jack then influences the boys into hunting and killing the beast, which becomes a violent turning point in the book.On the other hand, Ralph and Piggy simply refuse to believe there is a beast. Later on, we get a real insight into the beastie. Piggy says the beast is just fear of the unknown "I know there isn't no beast—not with claws and all that, I mean—but I know there isn't no fear, either.”(5.90) Simon however had a different interpretation to what the beastie could be. He says that it is inside everyone and…
