Course code BDS 112
Course title: Community Development
Purpose: To introduce the students to the community development principles and concepts in order to equip them with knowledge to enable them appreciate and understand communities and how development is achieved at this level.
Course Objectives: By the end of the course, the students should be able to:
1. Understand the theoretical basis of community development and how this is applied to development work.
2. Appreciate and list the roles and responsibilities of the community development workers within the context of developing countries.
3. Be knowledgeable on the various models of community development and what is entailed in community participation. 4. Have understanding of the way in which community development workers work.
Contents: Theoretical Understanding of Community Development- definitions, features and characteristics of community development, activities and role of community development workers. Community needs assessment- definition, criteria, process factors for group mobilization, models of community mobilization community participation, characteristics, spontaneous social action model and empowerment.
