Battle for Olympus(Crises in Rivers State People's Democratic Party, Nigeria)
BATTLE FOR OLYMPUS
“Olympus was not shaken by winds nor ever wet with rain, nor did snow fall upon it but the air is outspread clear and clouds and over it hovered a radiant whiteness”
With these words, Homer described the overwhelming nature of the mount Olympus. It was the dwelling place of victors and champions, a home for the Olympians. A place for the most powerful.
In Rivers politics, there is no inkling of a doubt as to where the most powerful converge.
The People’s Democratic Party has been the seat of power and virtually every significant political process in the state. The PDP has been our “Olympus” in Rivers State.
Just like Olympus in Greek mythology, many have tried to wrest power from it, attacking with every means but the party has remained strong and domineering.
But now, Olympus faces a “rift” that if not quelled will shake it very foundations.
The beginning of this rift is known only by the actors themselves yet its flames are seen even as far as Abuja. The ‘rift’ is that between RT Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi (Governor, Rivers State and Chairman NGF) and Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike (Minister of State for Education FGN).
Though it is widely acclaimed that the minister is no match for the Governor (no match ‘yet’ I will add), it is important to see how they came to where they are and the stuff that makes them who they are.

COURTS – The Federal High Court verdict of April 15,2013 delivered by Justice Ishaq Bello is not the first court case to be connected with the two. As a matter of fact, their first encounters in this present democratic structure were decided by courts.
It is acclaimed that Nyesom Wike lost in the PDP primaries for Obio/Akpor LGA Chairmanship in 1999, went to court and was adjudged the rightful winner.
While his court victory played out, a certain Rotimi Amaechi scored a career defining court victory over his rival Uche Okuku for the Ikwerre LGA seat in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Naia then waited for a reply from Zeus or Poseidon. She noticed the waves were dying down. An enormous wave approached her boat, and Naia started to feel scared. Then, like magic, the wave seemed to pick her up. The next thing she knew, Naia was standing in the courtroom of Olympus. She explained her idea again, but more thoroughly. Zeus and Poseidon nodded, and told Naia to step outside the room.…

A characteristics of an epic hero demonstrated in Homer epic poems was the interference of supernatural beings either as allies or enemies. Ancient Greeks society believed in gods and goddesses who live above Mount Olympus and watch over mortals below. The Greeks believed that these gods and goddesses interfered with life below Olympus. This is seen in both Homers poems the Iliad and the Odyssey, where the gods interfered throughout the stories. In the Iliad, the gods interfered in both side of the war, by favoring who they were going to help. When Agamemnon did not return Chryseis, her father a Trojan high priest turned to Apollo for help. In turn, Apollo sent a plague throughout the Greek army. When Hector took Achilles armor from Patroclus,…

“Zeus, yours is the power, Zeus, what man on Earth override it, who can hold it back? Power that neither Sleep, the all-ensnaring no, nor the tireless months of heaven can ever overmaster-young through all time mighty lord of power, you hold fast the dazzling crystal mansions of Olympus.” (678-684). The chorus is asking Zeus who can overthrow the curse or stop it. It goes on to describe how no matter how much time has passed and if the youth gains power, none of them can break the curse nor hold a candle close to Zeus. No one in the next generations could ever surpass the power of Zeus. Zeus holds the most power out of all the gods on Olympus. He holds more power than ever his own brothers, Poseidon and Hades. What the quote is essentially saying is that the only way the curse can be released is if Zeus lifted it with his own power. Other than that, the curse will stay…

After a glorious victory in the Battle of Troy, a Greek leader and king stumbles upon the great king and queen of the Phoenicians during his voyage back to his homeland. Thrown off course by the mythological gods and monsters of Greek mythology, Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, must endure many obstacles for twenty years prior to reaching his kingdom. In the epic poem, The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus’ travels start during what is known as “ The great wanderings”. Odysseus portrays the qualities of Aristotle’s epic hero throughout this portion of the epic. To emphasize this statement, think about the epic hero Gilgamesh, the king of the land between rivers, ruler of the magnificent city Uruk. Even though Gilgamesh is two-thirds god and one…

Ancient Greece was comprised of an abundant mountainous terrain, which led to the development of the polis around 750 B.C.E. Ancient Athenians were a thoughtful people, who delved into the logical study of subjects like science, philosophy, and history among various other studies. The ancients Greeks were polytheistic. (Kearns) A major way that their religion was taught was through myths and legends. Their major gods and goddesses lived at the top of Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece, and myths described their lives and actions. In myths, gods often actively intervened in the day-to-day lives of humans. While the Greek religion was not based on a written creed or body of dogma, certain sacred writings survived through time in the form of hymns, oracles, inscriptions, and instructions to the dead. The most well known and ornate are the Homeric Hymns. Scholars are unsure whether or not theses were composed for religious festivals, though their subject matter is almost entirely mythological, based on the religions of today. These anecdotes were used to help explain the unknown and often teach a lesson. (Kearns)…

Is Homer's The Iliad relevant to today's society? Is this work a timeless parable depicting universal human truths transcending time and context or merely a superbly-crafted epic poem to be studied and admired for its stylistic brilliance? Has the text endured simply because of Homer's dramatic verse or because of the timeless human truths it conveys? Was it written to persuade readers to question the moral implications and savagery of war or simply to provide provocative entertainment? These questions have been posed for centuries yet rarely have been sufficiently answered. However, an astute student of contemporary politics, media, and entertainment cannot fail to notice that many Homeric themes, such as the celebration of war, the corruption of power, and man's desire for personal glory are as apparent in contemporary American life as they are within the pages of The Iliad. Though it is unknown whether or not the blind Greek poet intended to create a work that would have such an enduring impact on Western man, clearly the poem's underlying themes and the ominous questions it raises remain relevant in the twenty-first century.…

There was once a war so great that the sound of it resonates for centuries. Known as the Trojan War, this clash which participated by gods and mortals had resulted not by the will of men, but by the actions of the gods themselves. The very seed of this catastrophe was the infamous golden apple of discord. If not been for the jealousy of immortals, this great war would never have been come to pass. But destiny had nurtured this seed, and not even a single person, both gods and mortals alike, could prevent this impending doom that swept over Greece like a great fire. Let us travel back in time when the gods often left their home in Mt. Olympus to dabble about the lives of the mortals.…
