Sherman Alexie is a Native American from the Spokane Reservation. He is the author of “Superman and Me.” An essay about how he taught himself to read at an early age and how he advanced very quickly. Alexie learned to read with a Superman comic book. Before he knew how to read he would look at the narrative above the picture and he would pretend to read the words aloud. He would say aloud,” Superman is breaking down the door.“ Alexie learned quickly. While his classmates were reading “Dick and Jane“ Alexie was reading “Grapes of Wrath.” Stereotypically, Indian children were supposed to fail in the classroom. Alexie was one of the few to not live up to those expectations. Alexie did anything but fail. The essay states, “As Indian children, [they] were expected to fail in the non-Indian world.” Alexie told himself, “I refuse to fail. I am smart. I am arrogant. I am lucky.“ Alexie read anything that had words and paragraphs. He read everything everywhere he went. His father bought hundreds of books, Alexie read them all. “If he’d been anything but an Indian boy living on the reservation he might have been called a prodigy.” These were the words Alexie used in his story. In Alexie’s adult life he became a writer and now visits schools and teaches creative writing to the Indian children. Alexie is the author of hundreds of poems, stories, and articles now. Most of the children read his stories and write their own, He is trying to save the Indian children’s lives.…
2. Historical and cultural aspects did not affect the film directly; however, it directly affected the original comics, which the film is based from. The comics were conceived in the 1930’s by Bob Kane. Bob Kane drew inspiration for the character of Bruce Wayne/ Batman. Films such as the Mark of Zorro and the Bat Whispers inspired Kane for some of Batman’s characteristics. The aspects of the Mark of Zorro that Kane used was the idea of that the government is insufficient to keep the villains in heck, as a result, the protagonist takes up the responsibility to defend his city. This…
As mentioned earlier, Batman and Superman eventually start to fight, as Batman calls him a sellout for letting the government abuse of his powers. In the scene batman utters, “And it has to end here on this filthy patch street, where my parents died” (190, 4). Batman is referring to crime alley where he eventually dies of a heart attack, the same place where his origin or initially “birth” began. It was the heart drive and tenacity that made him who he is Batman. However, in this cased his own will and heart has failed to make him achieve another victory. Ironically, on his return to crime alley, he received a loss where he is portrayed as the “criminal” and has been defeated by the national heroic figure of Superman that that the government prefers. All births eventually come to an end, making batman’s physical mortality genuine and the termination of his heroic cycle.…
Over spring break I went shopping at the Hanford mall for more clothes, and me and my grandmother went to the movies to watch “Batman v Superman”. The only place that I went besides Hanford was Tulare to visit with my extended family for Easter. On Easter i went over to my aunt and uncle’s house, and arranged an easter egg hunt for my little cousins then later barbecued and told stories. I currently have quite good grades I am happy with most of my grades, although I believe I can improve one of them. My goal by the end of this year is to be fully signed up for the Navy, or a college if I do not qualify for the Navy.…
Batman is Gotham City’s super hero that takes on the evil in their city. Superman is an ‘alien’ that came to earth to survive and protects Metropolis as best he can. In the movie, Batman v. Superman, Batman fears the actions of the god-like Superman, being unchecked, causing damage and harm. Batman then becomes involved and takes on superman causing even more destruction, while the world needs a decision on what kind of hero it really needs. Someone could learn from this movie that solving conflicts always come with crossfire and you can’t help it, you need to overcome the situation not escalate it.…
In the film The Dark Night, Batman sacrifice’s his life for the citizens of Gotham city. As Batman has fought the Joker trying to save lives of citizen, in the process many have died. People may say that Batman has caused many of these tragedies due to not doing the job right or saving peoples’ lives in time. The motivation of his sacrifice’s is to put the Joker away and stop the crime rate in the city. He doesn’t want more deaths due to crime from the Joker and any other crimes. He wants to keep people safe under his watch, that is his job. There doesn’t seem to be any limits to the sacrifice’s that Batman has made to help. He puts his live in danger to help save lives and fight crime that is in Gotham City.…
In the deep and dark shadows of Gotham city is a hero, The Dark Knight, or as many people know him: Batman. The Dark Knight is the second film in the Batman trilogy. The story follows the relentless conflict involving Batman and his nemesis, “The Joker.” He ends up teaming up with the mob in Gotham against Batman, to take him down.…
A few of the movies strayed from the norm, making the character seem like an utter joke – such as George Clooney’s version – but both Michael Keaton in the 1989 film and Christian Bale in the Christopher Nolan franchise was able to redeem the face of the superhero in theatrical media. They were able to piece back the truth of Bruce-Wayne-slash-Batman’s status as the ultimate outsider within the sphere of people he should be relating to, and yet simply cannot; as any human would experience. Bale’s portrayal in particular heightens this fact, as he returns to Gotham, but constantly moves at his own pace and refuses to cower in the face of anyone else. By any standard, he can be described as the reflection of individuals today: more lonesome; more hopeful in a world deprived of…
The superhero that I would like to change places with for a day is Batman. We all love to cheer for our heroes but at the same time we're really intrigued by the villains. There's just something about them that captures our interests , even more so then the heroes. Batman has the personality of a villain but the heart of a hero, so he's the best of both worlds. It's a way for us to have a mythic cake but eat I too. That's what makes batman such an interesting character , he looks, walks, talks and acts like a villain but he's the good guy. He's doing it for a good cause, so it's okay for us to enjoy it. Rather than that cookie cutter mold of a hero that super man fits perfectly, batman breaks that mold. He doesn't act the way that a hero typically…

The Dark Knight was made in 2008 and had a stellar cast including Heath Ledger, Christian Bale and Morgan Freeman. The Dark Knight was portrayed in many different ways, by an animated series, movies in the 90's, but the best take on the comic book favorite is the dark and twisted version directed by Christopher Nolan. The shots of explosions as well as Batman jumping off buildings, really puts The Dark Knight into the action genre. Nolan also shows in the trailer a couple hints of drama that Batman must face throughout the movie. The trailer shows a little of Batman’s struggles with his new foe that he comes up against and the dark music helps to improve the drama genre aspect of the movie. The Dark Knight is an action movie, but with a twist of drama. The trailer gives both sides of the two genres with the help of the action shots and the scenes where batman is struggling. The trailer draws audiences in who are fans of drama and action movies with aspects of both genres. The characteristics that draws an audience to The Dark Knight is the cast, the action and suspense, and the appeal of Batman.…
To understand one of the major themes in The Dark Knight Rises, one has to first understand a critical plot driver in The Dark Knight.. The Dark Knight ends with a noble lie: Batman takes responsibility for Harvey Dent’s murders, thus preventing the fall of Gotham’s White Knight and protecting his image as a leader of justice and hope. The viewer is left to wonder what is more important, the terrible…
Although they differ in roles, Batman is recognized as the hero, while The Joker is considered he villain, they are alike in several ways because neither wants to kill each other first, while none of them are completely sane, for they have both been created by tragedy.…
The Invisibilia Podcast on "How to Become Batman,” discussed how people’s expectations can influence a person whether consciously or subconsciously. I found the podcast to be very interesting, the example used of the blind actually being able to see was quite intriguing. It seems as though the expectations of others provide a sense of structure or social boundary for an individual to stay within. When expectations are too low it leads to an almost constrained agency, where the individual does not feel capable of going beyond these “boundaries,” because they have been told they cannot. The example that stood out was with the rats, I found it interesting that the researchers were subconsciously treating the rats differently based on the label…
Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns questions what is right and what is wrong. It makes you wonder if the government is the bad guy, or if it is the criminals, or maybe even Batman himself. Miller uses duality and creates closure to show that there is always another side of the coin and all you have to do is flip it to see it. He also uses art to build context and tension by starting with art that is abstract. The art slowly changes to brighter colors and less abstract art as the tension of the plot builds. With the use of an iconic archetypal vigilante seeking justice, Miller also emphasizes the ever-present question of morality.…
