Bataan Nuclear Power Plant
Assignment 4: Bataan Nuclear Power Plant The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) is located in Morong, Bataan and was constructed under the administration of President Ferdinand Ferdinand Marcos during the Martial Law period. Westinghouse was contracted to build the light water reactor, deign to produce 621 megawatts of electricity. This power plant was constructed under loan $600 million for two units but controversially it ballooned up to $2.3 billion. After The Marcos’ was thrown to Hawaii, the succeeding administration, President Cory Aquino commissioned a series of assessment studies to know if the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant should be opened. “First, and foremost, serious questions had been raised by responsible parties on whether the BNPP was safe as designed and constructed. Second, there had been persistent rumours and speculation that he (Marcos) had been bribed in connection with the award of the BNPP contracts.” (Saguisag 1991) For me, as a citizen of the Philippines, the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant should not be reopened because the consequences is higher than those what we will benefit for the operation of this power plant. Although it has benefits there are more disadvantages we can get by simply opening it again. The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant was constructed during the times when President Marcos has his cronies and it can’t be helped to assume that the plant was corrupted of the proper fund. Experts says that the plant has its sister power plant in many other countries with the same function and specification but it is in the Philippines not all the materials are followed and the conditions in the Philippines is not the same with those of the other countries. We know history repeats itself, if the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant was to reopen it may cause corruption with the state of the government system in the country. It will also add up to the growing debt of the Philippines and may be a burden to the progress of the Philippines. Another

As a young adult in today’s society, I am constantly surrounded and influenced by images in the media. Whether a photograph, a film, a news segment on T.V., or something on the internet, visual images are becoming an increasingly powerful influence. During a time of war and destruction, America is constantly shown images of soldiers fighting, innocent citizens dying, and terror among those who want peace. Throughout history this has been the case with each war. However, it’s the images shown after war that I find most moving. The image of the five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising an American flag above the rubble of the Battle of Iwo Jima is one of the most powerful images I’ve seen. Iwo Jima was a battle that was fought from February 19, 1945 until March 26, 1945. America was attempting to capture the island from Japanese forces due to its two air bases and its close vicinity to the main lands of Japan. Japan was heavily armed but the American soldiers had a widespread navy fleet and a strong ground team and won the battle. When the fight had ended an estimated 22,000 of Japan’s soldiers had died along with 7,000 American soldiers. The dust had cleared and standing among the ruins were these American soldiers, proudly raising the flag of their country. This image of Iwo Jima, shot by Joe Rosenthal, not only shows the bravery and hard work of these soldiers through its use of emotional appeals, motifs, and composition, but also the destruction caused by war.…

The Manhattan Project was secret military project created in 1942 to produce the first US nuclear weapon. The Manhattan Project basically arrived from the ideals and fears of a Nazi Germany having access to nuclear capabilities during the war, and the threat of them using those nuclear weapons was at an all time high during the reign of Hitler. In order to combat this alarming problem, the United States government/military started a top secret program to help develop the world’s first nuclear weapon. The Manhattan project was directed by US physicist named Robert Oppenheimer and General Leslie R. Groves. The two went on to recruit hundreds of the best engineers, scientists, and mathematicians in the United States. In the same respect dozens…

In 1938, three chemists discovered how to split the uranium atom. When the atom splits it releases a tremendous about of energy, enough to power a bomb. But when they made this huge discovery there was many more problems that had to be solved before they could use such a weapon. Albert Einstein learned that the Germans were succeeding in solving how to make such a weapon. Einstein and Enrico Fermi, who escaped Fascist Italy agreed that the President must be informed of the dangers of atomic technology in the hands of the Axis powers. Then Einstein wrote a letter to President Roosevelt with his concerns in 1939. This letter helped initiate the U.S. effort to build an atomic bomb to fight the war. But in July 1940, the U.S. Army Intelligence…

Aside from political power, the Philippines should also be able to cater to its citizens and to protect them from attacks and ensure their security. From dreaded terrorists to individual crime rates, the military should also be capable of protecting citizens through advanced armory, tracking systems and efficient justice systems (Gray, 2011). Most of the problems in today’s military strategy are not the existence of the equipment but the capability to power them up and therefore reduce the costs for their creation (Gray, 2011). With the aid of solar power, the military can produce better equipment that can easily track down wanted individuals, or those that can place internal security systems to provide people with increased security both inside and outside their homes. With solar energy, the military can also be able to combat vicious terrorists such as ISIS or the Al-Qaeda and therefore restore political and social stability in the world.…

The question of whether the U.S. should have nuclear power plants is very controversial. There are two sides that one can take; however, both sides have their own share of problems. If you chose to not have nuclear plants, then eventually all natural resources will run out. The oil supply will run out relatively soon, and all other sources will run out too. The natural resources that we have now are still harmful to the earth however. The gas which we use for our cars pollutes the air and considering the amount of cars the are driven each day, it is ripping apart the o-zone layer. However, if the U.S. does decide to use nuclear plants, then there is a great danger of toxic waste invading our rivers, and also the chance of a spill similar to Chernobyl. As we saw in the Chernobyl video, there is great danger when using nuclear energy. If this were to happen is the United States, the risk of mortality is much higher because the area's in which there would be a plant such as a big city are very densely populated. Because of these facts, I do not think that the U.S. should renew its efforts to develop more nuclear plants.…

    2. Nuclear Fission :- In nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry, nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into smaller parts (lighter nuclei), often producing free neutrons and photons (in the form of gamma rays), and releasing a tremendous amount of energy. The two nuclei produced are most often of comparable size, typically with a mass ratio around 3:2 for common fissile isotopes.[1][2].The smallest of these ranges in size from a proton to an argon nucleus. Fission of heavy elements is an exothermic reaction which can release large amounts. Fission is a form of nuclear transmutation because the resulting fragments are not the same element as the original atom. Nuclear fission produces energy for nuclear power and to drive the explosion of nuclear weapons.…

When I’m reading articles, facts, and history about this, I was surprised with 137.288 billion pesos estimated fund collected annually with this project. In reality with this capital, we can build another oil industry and various projects to manipulate this asset which primarily based on research that Philippines are rich in natural resources. When we overcome this proper usage, manipulation, development and strengthening the force of our country that we may be not able to bully by other states and get this place which are capable to make our country powerful than them.
