Bass Pro Shops
Bass Pro was started in 1971 by a man named Johnny Morris, a fisherman that was tired of not being able to get good fishing tackle at local stores. He got the idea after a family trip to Maine where Johnny visited an L.L. Bean store. He figured ‘if a store like that could get people to come to Maine why not Missouri.’ (O”Donnell 2009) He would drive around the country looking for premium fishing tackle that he could find to fill his U-haul trailer with to sell. He would bring his new found fishing tackle back to his home in Springfield, Missouri where he set up shop in his dad’s liquor store. His dad’s liquor store was a popular stopping spot on the way to the Ozark’s famous bass lakes. The anglers had such great success that they started to call when they got back home asking for more of his tackle. So in 1974, he printed and mailed the first Bass Pro Shops catalogues. Johnny introduced the first professionally rigged boat including motor and trailer in 1978. His fishing-ready boat ‘package’ revolutionized the marine industry, which is why there are boat showrooms in every Bass Pro Shops store. Bass Pro Shops headquarters is located in Springfield, Missouri and has about sixty Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World stores located throughout the United States and Canada serving over 75 million sportsmen a year. Each store sells boats, firearms, equipment and apparel for most outdoor activities. According to the Bass Pro Shops website the company’s’ mission statement is “to be the leading merchant of outdoor recreational products inspiring people to love, enjoy, and conserve the great outdoors.” The company’s first Outdoor World was built in 1981 in Springfield and is the states largest tourist attraction. They also have an 850 acre resort in Branson, Missouri called Big Cedar Lodge in the Ozark Mountains. This is an attraction to many hunters and fishermen, as well as people just looking to boat, ski, hike, or just get away from it all. In 2011 it had 18,000

Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank founded the Home Depot in 1978. Along with investment banker Ken Langone and merchandising expert Pat Farrah, the founder’s vision of one-stop shopping for the do-it-yourselfer became a reality when they opened the first two Home Depot stores on June 22, 1979, in Atlanta, Georgia. The first stores, at around 60,000 square feet each, were enormous warehouses that dwarfed the competition and stocked 25,000 SKUs, much more than the average hardware store at that time. Empty boxes piled high on the shelves gave the illusion of even more product and in only one year they opened a 4th store in Atlanta and the company had annual sales…

The company was founded in 1948 by Dick Stack at the age of 18. Stack came up with the idea while working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York. The owner wanted to get Stack’s opinion on whether it would be a good idea for the store to offer fishing bait and tackle gear. Stack immensely approved and composed a marketing plan on his own time. When he presented his plan to the store owner, he was shocked at his boss’s rejection and his comments that Stack “would never make a good merchant.” While nursing his wounded pride after hearing the comments from his boss, Stack’s grandmother gave him three hundred dollars to start his own business and encouraged him to pursue his dreams. As an avid fisherman, Stack opened his own bait and tackle shop in Binghamton and by 1958 he expanded the product line to include most of the things you can find in Dicks Sporting Goods stores across America today. In 1984, Dick Stack retired and his son, Edward, took over the company and began the massive expansion of the store into a sporting goods superstore. Today, Dick 's has “451 stores in 42 states, 81 Golf Galaxy stores and an online site”. (wikipedia)…

Bass Fishing is one of America’s most famous pass times and started with very humble beginnings. Bass fishing became popular soon after George W. Perry caught a twenty-two pound four once largemouth bass. This bass set the record in America for bass fishing and has stood for almost fifty years. The official measurements were taken in Helena, Georgia.Bass fishing has sense evolved from what George Perry was used to and is now aided by many newer inventions such as artificial lures and advanced fishing reels. None of these fishing, but were adapted by the fishermen themselves. Bass fishing became more widespread as more and more rivers were dammed for hydroelectricity purposes. As these dams polluted the water they killed most of the river’s trout and salmon. Bass were then imported to replace the trout and to help sustain the ecosystems around these dams.
