    Interchanges control access and handle the movement of traffic between roadways. In this paper only 2 types of interchanges are studied: the diamond interchange and the cloverleaf interchange. The diamond interchange is a system of interconnecting roadways that provides for the movement of traffic between two or more highways on different levels, usually signalized to control conflict points. A cloverleaf interchange is a two-level interchange in which left turns are handled by loop roads, which creates a free-flow traffic pattern where traffic signals would cause congestion. There are considerably less points of conflict in a diamond interchange than there are for cloverleaf interchanges mainly because of the weaving sections. Considering safety alone, the diamond interchange is preferable to a cloverleaf interchange.…

    ‘Scramble crossings’ for pedestrians at signal junctions are widely used in Japan and have been reintroduced in Canada and the United States as a way of prioritising pedestrian movement by stopping all traffic movement and allowing pedestrians to cross in every direction at the same time. Some examples exist in the UK but their use is not widespread. One potential reason for this is there is limited guidance on when ‘scramble crossings’ should be considered as potential schemes for promoting pedestrian priority. This paper focuses on the proposed scramble or diagonal crossing scheme at Oxford Circus in central London. This has been designed by Atkins on behalf of The Crown Estate, Transport for London (TfL), Westminster City Council (WCC) and the New West End Company (NWEC) and was implemented during 2009. The purpose of the paper is to identify some of the existing examples in the UK and overseas and review the existing guidance on their application of scrambled crossings. The paper then describes the design process and key features of the Oxford Circus scheme and based on this experience concludes by suggesting potential future applications of scramble crossings in the UK.…

    During exercise 1, our group have observed the traffic conditions on Clementi Avenue 6 from AYE into the road section in the video. At the same time, we measured the number of the vehicle on the road by 5 minutes interval, four lanes and different types of vehicles. We decided a dummy line on separate lane to count the number of vehicles as well as categorize the vehicles by six types as motorcycle, car, van, bus, goods truck and truck. Through the data processing after observation, we made some tables, bar and pie graphs to demonstrate the data clearly. And we can tell the different traffic conditions among different lanes and vehicles easily from those charts. The tables contain the detailed data of the different types of vehicles that passed the dummy line within 30 minutes. The bar graphs demonstrate traffic flow of separate types of vehicles with 5-minute interval in 30 minutes. The pie graphs show the percentage of different types of vehicles within 30 minutes.
