Banquo's Ambition In Macbeth
Ambition brings the strong desire to obtain something or achieve a goal. The outcome of deciding to kill King Duncan, gaining the drive to commit a crime, and not following Banquo advice was fueled by ambition. Macbeth was driven by his ambition for power that concluded in a very negative outcome. In act one, Macbeth had gathered thoughts about killing King Duncan when he learns about the prophecy that will be king. Macbeth’s greed overwhelmed him, from acquiring this new knowledge his ambition changes. He says, “Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair and make my seat heart knock at my ribs, against the use of nature? Present fears are less than horrible imaginings. Banquets descendants will be the ones in power after Macbeth. This is prophesied by the three witches in act one scene three. Banquo explains this by saying. “Thou hast it now: king, Cawdor, Glamis, all, as the weird women promised, and I fear thou played’st most foully for’t. Yet it was said It should not stand in thy posterity, but that myself should be the root and father of many kings. If there come truth for them— As upon thee, Macbeth, their speeches shine— Why, by the verities on thee made good, may they not be my oracles as well, and set me up in hope? When Lady Macbeth was questioning the servant about Macbeth whereabouts, she expressed her feelings and ambition to take out Malcolm. Lady Macbeth exclaimed this “Under my battlements. Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full Of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood. Stop up the access and passage to remorse, That no compunctious visitings of nature Shake my fell purpose, nor keep peace between The effect and it!” (I.V.390-397). Lady Macbeth is showing significant mental disability as her ambition is flooded with violence and cruelty, which led to influence Macbeth
