Banned Books?
Banned Books? A banned book is a book that is restricted from children under the age of eighteen. Many books are banned as a result of it being considered
"sexually explicit", "unsuited to any age group" or if the material contains
"offensive language". Many books are being banned from children all over the world by public libraries, schools, parents, or even government. No one should have the right to restrict anyone from reading anything except for parents who should only be able to ban their own children from reading a book. "Censorship by librarians of constitutionally protected speech, whether for protection or for any other reason, violates the first amendment." - www.Ala.org I have read Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. It is often banned or challenged because of its rape scenes and the depressing and emothional feelings expressed throughout the book. On macbookkids.com it states "Andersons book sends a critical message not only to teenagers, but to adults as well. If you are or have been a victim of sexual assault, speak up, you dont have to go through this on your own." In My opinion, Speak should not be banned. Too many young girls face the same situation Malinda Sordino found herself in. They need to know that by speaking up they are "no longer victims but are survivors" of rape or sexual assault. Silence wont do any good, and people need to know that. Speak has an important message that needs to be heard. So why ban it?

The other reason that this book should be banned was going against religious beliefs. This statement did not make sense to me. I feel as if this book stays within the guidelines of religion, for the fact that they never stated anything that even related to religion. So, maybe the violence and the language were a little bit rough, but for the sake of religious background, this book should not be banned.…

I have been called boring. That is not the case! Well, I will let you decide. Here is a look into my personal life. I am a parent of 2 kids. I used to be married to Audrey Kingsworth-Trump, but we got divorced because she didn’t appreciate my personality. She is already dead to me. I have forgotten about her completely and have moved on. I am now remarried to a Mary Magador, who is currently a music professor at the same university in which I enrich the minds of adolescences with knowledge of English Language Arts and Literature. When I heard that my son, Leo, was starting to read a banned book in school, I was appalled! Banned books were banned for a reason! Why on earth are we letting previously banned books back into our society? This is…

    Why Do Books Be Banned

Not all books that are banned should be but there are some that I see good reasoning for why it has been banned. In my opinion the book I read shouldn’t be banned, but I do see why some readers feel that it should, in the book there is some violence that might be disturbing to a young reader. Also to some young readers they may find the book to be scary. Even with these other points I am still against banning this book and many other books. I encourage anyone who dislikes a book or finds it inappropriate to think about their decision before challenging or banning a…

Second-wave feminism. The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. The base of evolutionary biology. All of these major changes in the world were products of books. People that read these influential pieces of literature went on to change the world and make history. Often, banned books lead the standings of contributors, as many of them become world renowned names such as To Kill A Mockingbird. Without these books, this world simply would not stand where it does today. People ban books because of the explicit content they hold and the negative impact they leave the reader with. Books should not be banned as they trail-blaze the path towards changing the world.…

It seems we are fast losing our freedoms as American citizens. Personal phone lines are tapped, religious freedoms are no longer allowed to be exercised in public schools, and never before has there been such a threat to America's very existence. Our manufacturing jobs have been leaving the country at a steady rate since the 1980's, health care is nearly impossible to afford, employers offer fewer benefits, social Security has been run into the ground, and our nation is in massive debt for trillions of dollars. And since books were hand written, our literature has been censored. In this modern era many would not think banning books, a hindrance on one’s freedom of choice, would be the situation, especially a great American novel such as The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This book is a classic, depicting the American dream of the self made man, and it should not have been banned.…

    Book Bannings

Books all over America are in danger. Books, objects that allow imagination and the expansion of the mind and the world around one, are often times subject to criticism and even bannings when any one person does not like the content. Books bannings should not be done whatsoever, let alone become a semi-common practice. Of course, bannings only occur after careful consideration. Or do they? Censorship is a growing problem in America, as parents and other authority figures ban various types of books in their community when content is too “edgy” or “age inappropriate”, and these are often gone through without the book so much as being opened. However, in all reality, what might be “wrong” for one child may be just right for another. Are book…

At first glance, the debate over banning books appears unimportant. Nevertheless, this debate has divided our nation into those who favor censoring books to protect their impressionable adolescents, and those who argue that education should be open for everybody without interference from the government in restricting the publishing and accessing of these books.…

Certain books are not only banned in schools but they are also banned in libraries, and bookstores, limiting public access to specific pieces of literature. Because there are so many reasons people challenge a book’s content, many more books are getting banned from schools. "Most frequently, books are challenged because they contain profanity or violence, sex or sex education, homosexuality, witchcraft and the occult, "secular humanism" or "new age" philosophies, portrayals of rebellious children, or "politically incorrect," racist or sexist language"(Mullaly). During this time in life, most of these topics are dealt with on a daily basis. Tons of people using drugs or trying to recover from drug use, different forms of sexuality and how the world can be both accepting and not accepting of it. People are around others with different beliefs, religious or otherwise, all the time. "But what's truly obscene is that I know a real girl in the real world who has gone through this. What's obscene is that so do you, even if you're not aware of the specifics. What's obscene is that you know kids who have gone through, and are going through, worse" (Crutcher). People see others facing difficult situations that are often similar to situations that happen in books, especially ones being banned. Sometimes a book is the most comforting thing to a person, if they find a book that perfectly represents the situation they are facing they can feel like they aren’t alone. Banning books doesn’t help a town as much as the…

Thank you for your comment. I also agree students should be allowed to read the material they want. The reason this case was brought to court was because the books were removed without taking in consideration other opinions. I think the reason this case was so important was because if the inequality that was being lived at the time. Society had recently fought a civil right movement and this was fresh in their minds. Not being allowed to read the books they wanted was evidence that inequality existed. I find that in today's time we are more open minded to other peoples view point. However, I believe schools censor books they find inappropriate everyday, they get to pick and choose the material that will be taught in…

Ever since the founding fathers of America wrote the first amendment, there has been controversy about what is and is not censorship. The first amendment states that “[c]ongress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for redress of grievances.” In relatively recent history, a popular test of this amendment has been whether or not book banning should be allowed in schools. Book banning is when an establishment, such as a school system, decides that certain…

    Censorship In Classroom

    • 779 Words

Censorship in the classroom is a very controversial topic and always remains a central issue when discussing the parameters of education. Our government plays a large role in governing what sort of information America’s children are exposed to within the set curriculum. The average American child receives the majority of their knowledge and education from school, so the information that is allowed to be taught is a very delicate and important issue which needs to be discussed more openly. When literature is altered or banned from public schools and libraries it can be over a variety of reasons. Books containing vulgar language, excessive violence, or connotations of drugs and sex are often items targeted for censorship. The reasoning behind…

Every day in the U.S., censorship strikes. It can appear easily, such as a school having a ‘banned books’ list, or restrictions may transpire unnoticed, when a teacher doesn’t order a certain book for fear of complaints. The American Library Association estimates four or five unreported limitation for every reported censorship incident. The top reasons for criticizing books include sexually explicit passages, offensive language, and inappropriate content for the age group. However, most are from parents or citizens just concerned for the community.…
