banksy case study
The artist that I have chosen for my case study is the reclusive, elusive, mysteries man known only as Banksy. “Banksy began his career as a graffiti artist in the early 1990s, in Bristol's graffiti gang DryBreadZ Crew. Although his early work was largely freehand, Banksy used stencils on occasion. In the late '90s, he began using stencils predominantly. His work became more widely recognized around Bristol and in London, as his signature style developed. He is also known for his use of copyrighted material and subversion of classic images.” (The Biography Channel website) Most of his work is what most would call graffiti or street art although over time and with reckless abandon he has taken a counter-culture society from backstreets to galleries around the world. Banksy first gallery show a self-funded event in 2003 titled turf war the venue being a rented run down warehouse. I truly respect his anti-establishment message, forcing fine art and high society to accept his chosen art form. Banksy is now enjoying the fruits of his labor “having pieces that have sold for over $200,000 at a Sotheby’s auction.” (Delana) “Journalist Max Foster has referred to the rising prices of graffiti as street art as "the Banksy effect.”” (The Biography Channel website) I also wish to be able to blaze a trail in gaming industry as Banksy has in the art world.
'The banality of the banality of evil ' Oil on oil on canvas, 2013
Banksy” re-painted a painting which sold at auction for $615,000 with the proceeds going to charity.” (banksyny.com) The original painting has strong elements of balance, unity and scale. I feel that Banksy was able to expand on these elements by adding emphasis via the Nazi imagery. The color used lead the viewer’s attention from the lake to the mountain tops, at the same adding a sense of depth to the painting.
Banksy ‘Girl with Heart Balloon’ spray paint stencil on wall, 2002
Girl with Heart Balloon is a classic example of Banksy’s early work in street art. The line work is very strong but this could be attributed to it being a stencil. He uses grey, black and white as tone colors and red as a complementary color. The girl’s extended out leads my eyesight to the red balloon above just out of her reach.

Banksy ‘No Trespassing Indian’ spray paint stencil on wall, 2010
Banksy uses simulated texture very well in this piece as the Indian and sign he holds onto seem almost lifelike. The emphasis here seems to flowing upward towards the sign. The pole the Indian is holding brings everything together through unity, tying the Indian to a no trespassing sign.

While looking at different pieces from the infamous graffiti artist Banksy’s new exhibit, “Dismaland” I noticed the image of Cinderella hanging out of her overturned carriage while a group of paparazzi continue to simply take photographs. In this piece Banksy utilizes juxtaposition, ethos and logos, and also iconic figures to convey his message of the problem with the media, and how in this day and age if we see someone’s life in disarray we are more likely to watch and do nothing than to help.…

I selected this painting because unlike the other ones I saw this one wasn’t dark and gloomy. Joys and sorrows is a colorful painting of a walk way surrounded by trees. From this painting I took from it that instead of focusing on the bad she took what was left of the good and painted a colorful walk way representing how she is only walking forward and not looking back on the harsh events in her early life. The artist’s purpose behind the painting can best be described as a quote she said. "I paint the canvas of my childhood, and sing the images I see." Which I believe perfectly explains why the artist painted this scene as representation of the holocaust.…

Andy Warhol founded the art movement called pop art, and his lifestyle and work both mocked and celebrated the world’s obsession with materiality and fame. On one side, his paintings of distorted everyday items and celebrity faces could be seen as a display for what he viewed as a culture consumed with money and being famous. On the other side, his focus on consumer goods and celebrities, and his own fame and fortune, suggest a life in celebration of the aspects of American culture that his work criticized.…

Many of Banksy’s works of art include juxtaposition. “Banksy revealed himself to be an artist with a particularly effective voice” (Panero). In the piece Untitled, he portrays two children standing on top of guns and ammunitions. One child can be seen holding a teddy bear. The other child is holding a heart shaped balloon. The painting is meant to show that love can conquer all and stop war. It shows that people can overcome the reasons that they started the wars and love one another. Also, Untitled can show that love is on top of war.…

, had he have the will to burn the painting or relinquish it? Perhaps, he could have burned it for the reason that the painting brought about painful memories. 1942, in Amsterdam German soldier Otto Engelbrecht loots the painting, hides it, and then escapes with it to America; bringing his son painful memories in the future. Although this could be the case, he could have relinquished it or destroyed it; this could be debated further because Cornelius knew that destroying the painting, would be burning a hole in his heart and soul; on the other hand relinquishing it, would bring the forever lasting disdain. In Vreeland, Laurens van Luyken, originally purchased the painting as an anniversary gift for his wife, but is hesitant, "‘No.' ‘ Why not the painting?' ‘Because I gave it to you.' ‘But it would be a touch of our home in theirs.' ‘I wouldn't want to be without it.'" (pg. 65) to give it to his daughter Johanna, who is engaged to the Amsterdamer Fritz. The value doesn't necessarily have to be something that is "rich," it can also be sentimentally valued to the heart and soul.…

In our small region of Scioto County, graffiti is often found everywhere. Usually, it is gang names, and words that are tattooed on walls or on the side of trains, that is if you don’t count the astonishing murals painted up on the flood walls. Other places, however, have graffiti that looks as if it belongs in an art museum. The city of Berlin has hundreds of of there beautiful masterpieces. It began when the wall in Berlin fell during the Cold War, and the creativity and chaos broke out with the Berlin people’s freedom. Since then the art of graffiti has spread, and dominated most of the walls. Many famous artist have arose from their street art there. One of them being AliCe, or Alice Pasquini. It is still vandalism and it is still wrong. Banksy, however, has used this crime as a way to start miniature revolutions in multiple countries. His beliefs and his art has been spread throughout the world, making him one of the most famous graffiti artist known today. In his documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop he states that, “People say graffiti is ugly, irresponsible and childish. But that's only if it's done properly” (qtd. Banksy, Exit Through the Gift Shop). What he means by this, is that people refuse to recognize the truths in his work. They continuously view his work as only a crime, and do not look at the message. He acknowledges that regardless of how honest his work is, there will still be people who look at it is as vandalism, and be blind in his eyes. Banksy’s artwork is more positive than it is negative, in the sense that he does not do it without purpose. He damages walls while creating awareness. “A wall is a very big weapon,” Banksy states, “it is one of the nastiest things you can hit someone with” (qtd. Banksy). With this power, Banksy continues today to raise awareness of international problems through art and mockery. He took a criminalized tool, and used it to show who the real criminals are. “The greatest crimes in the world are not committed by people breaking the rules but by people following the rules. It's people who follow orders that drop bombs and massacre villages” (qtd.…

From cave drawings to hieroglyphics to the streets of New York, graffiti and street art have made their marks as the most ancient form of resilient communication. Whether viewed through the lens of skeptics or supporters, the practice remains in the gray area of legality, despite it’s remarkable positive artistic and creative worth. Graffiti has many unsung beneficial traits, and encompasses an entire urban culture, as is highlighted in The New York Times article “Writings on the Wall (Art is too, for Now)” by Robin Finn.…

Irvine (2012, 1) suggests that since 1990s, street artists such as Banksy and Swoon have became a part of the present and contemporary art practices, which interpret and prescribe social and political issues through visual art in the public space. He claims that “A useful differentiator for street artists is the use of walls as mural space” (Irvine, 2012, 6). This quote suggests that most artists use walls to create their murals in them in different ways such as graffiti of images, paintings or…
