Earth, the planet that is said to have the most resources to sustain life. A planet that allows us as humans to be born in and continue to live in as we age because of its amazing resources. It isn’t blazing in flames like the Sun, or composed of rock and ice like Pluto, Earth has water, trees, and rotates around the sun for heat. It is almost as if Earth were tailored when created to fit human need’s, we drink water and breathe its oxygen to survive, we use its plants for various reasons, from eating them, to making remedies, to smoking them etc. Knowing that Earth is a special planet, you would think that its habitants would take better care of it right? So that future generations could enjoy the same resources that we do. Well sadly, that is not the case, we are currently going through a process called global warming. The atmosphere is choking from excessive amounts of carbon dioxide. Greenhouse gases are melting polar icecaps and rising sea levels. Deforestation is diminishing our chances of ever discovering new species in forests and destroying the carbon cycle. Humans do in fact have the capability of changing the basic chemistry of this massive planet. Scientific evidence shows that we have already contributed to irreversible climate change. Humankind has an obligation to reconcile its difference with the environment and learn to conserve natural resources. Conservation begins with knowledge, which leads to action, which will save our…

    Consumerism In America

The United States does not look good from an environmental standpoint compared to other countries. If every other country consumed at the rate the United States does, we would need three to five planets. That’s a lot of garbage and “stuff” to place on other planets. Another fact is that in just the past thirty years we have used up 30% of the planets natural resources. This is a mind-boggling statistic and very hard to imagine. In sixty years time, if we don’t change the rate at which we consume and the way in which we consume, the earth will have very few natural resources left for us to take. Our high rate of consumerism is a major part of this problem.…

In today’s fast-paced society, people seem to ignore one of the most important factors of why we are alive: planet earth! It provides us with water, “fresh” air, and a limited supply of natural resources. Mother earth has been a gracious host but it seems as if humans might be overstaying their visit. Modern day greedy businessmen try to squeeze every last drop of juice from earth. But soon, the earth will be all dried up with no more juice to offer. Fortunately, thanks to the work of many environmentalists all around the world from the present day, the world may be able to recover from all its injuries caused by the insatiable human race. Rachel Carson’s book “Silent Spring”, which spurred the environmental movement, helped raise awareness for the environment, warn humans of the dangers of using pesticides such as DDT, preserve several plant and animal species, and make the atmosphere cleaner…

There are many problems facing the world today; serious problems that could have grave consequences if not resolved within the next few years. However, there is one looming problem, which if not resolved, could make all other problems obsolete; the way that we take care of the environment, or rather the way we neglect it. The environment is a necessity for everyday life. Without the environment, we would die. How we chose to end global warming is interesting, because much of our daily uses affect the environment.…

Thomas Jefferson was against standing peacetime armies--- calling such armies as evil. He was also a strong believer that such militaries could cause more harm than good and making remarks such as, “nor is it conceived needful or safe that a standing army should be kept up in time of peace for defense against invasion.” Although Thomas had this belief system he was not blind to the fact that Americans still needed to protect itself from enemies and Native Americans; therefore, Jefferson believed the best solution to protect the country and prevent dependence of such wickedness, of a standing army, was to allow possession of guns to citizens causing the second Amendment to be adopted, which states that, “A well-regulated militia , being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” However, two hundred twenty- one year later Jefferson belief isn’t the path we have chosen and we have armed ourselves with not only military forces but also forces that remained active during peacetimes causing a war between advocators of gun control and pro-gun supporters in America.…

Moreover, I aim to give back to the Earth, I’ve already started my journey by leading the Eco-Warrior club at my school to make Reed High more environmentally friendly. I feel that humanity should aspire to maintain the Earth for generations to come. As I hear about the exploitation of our planet it angers me knowing that people abusively strip the Earth of her resources; we cannot go rampantly destroying the same home which provides us with life. I am driven by the moralistic need to preserve the Earth which has given us everything. We must give back all that we’ve taken from the…
