Band Essay
Loyalty, dedication, perseverance, the willingness to take advice from other people, and the ability to be able to work with others are some of the personal strengths that I have and will use to make this band a better program. Some areas that this band program needs to improve on are the way the members take it for granted the fact that they have a program. Honestly it is ridiculous that some of our own leaders don’t follow their own orders, and as a result it becomes a habit for others to follow them and it will affect us on our playing because everyone will think that it is ok to not come to practice or just come really late to practice all the time. I would try to fix this problem enforcing the times that we have to be in our chairs paying attention to our directors. I want to see more our sections getting closer to each other instead of all of us fighting and just being mean to each other. This fighting is completely worthless for the fact that we are all on the same team, we should work together like a family. I would want to try and get the whole band together and try to have a social event at the beginning of the year and at the end. These two times will bring all of us together like never before. My teacher, is a great teacher and a humble man that I look up to because he is a teacher while serving our country in the army. I interviewed on his intake of leadership. He said that leadership is when a leader puts themselves in the position of their followers. I learned that as a leader I shouldn’t put myself over them in a way where I am like a dictator. Also that we are all equal and that we have a voice. Even though some of this is true, I disagree with the part that everyone has a voice because if they did then who will follow the leader if that leader has no followers. During this week I had to do a service project for this position of office, but I never really considered a chore because I like to help people because I reality I did about 2 or 3

A dictionary definition of a leader is a guiding hand in a movement or group. My definition of a leader is someone who stands out amongst the rest and steps up to the task and helps the “followers” advance and strive to become a leader as well. The only way a leader can be effective is by leading by example. A prime example of this is Malala Yousafzai. She was shot in the face for trying to go to school. If she hadn’t gone to school she wouldn’t have been shot, but she also wouldn’t have a Nobel Peace prize. She is now using her story to speak for access to education for everyone. A leader is someone who leads by example and uses their skills to help others succeed.…

One will understand that they must be patient with their fellow peers, for the reason that some people might struggle with marching, or memorize their music slower than others. One must learn that respect is not given, but earned. Just because a drum major has more authority than a regular ole’ trombone player, does not mean they will receive respect from that trombone player right away. One will gain integrity; being a drum major requires an individual to work with fellow band members and treat everyone fairly while keeping in mind moral virtues. And last but not least, most importantly, one must learn how to roll with the punches. Whether the band gets off tempo during show, somebody loses their drill, the metronome dies and needs new batteries right at that moment, or even when the director doesn’t have a key to the band tower and needs somebody to run inside and get one, learning how to handle tough situations in a orderly manner is essential. A drum major is someone the band considers a role model, and if they are stressed out, or blowing each circumstance out of proportion, they will lose respect from their peers. That individual will not be considered principled, but amoral.…

To me, leadership is leading by example. My years in high school have shown me that the person who builds people up, and shows kindness is more of a leader than someone who commands and controls people. I strive to be this kind, caring person who others can look up to. As I grow older, I hope that by doing the right things, I can inspire others to do the same.…

I understand that with this job comes great responsibility, and I am definitely ready for it! Being a member of the Orange Wave marching band for two years I have an idea of how to make band more attractive to everyone. Making the time spent in band class and at after school practices most effective is a major prerogative of mine. I would like to make it our number one goal to get every band member to learn, and memorize their music. This will allow the show to be ready as early as possible so it gives ample time to perfect formations, add character to the show, and make it our own. By doing this I know our scores will be significantly higher than last years. Most importantly each member will understand that hard work does pays off.…

Improving a band musicianship starts with being able to play an instrument to your fullest ability, and that begins with a healthy body. To improve the health of the band as a whole we will start to run laps around the school and do physical warm-ups (stretching, jumping jacks ,breathing exercises, etc) at least twice a week to improve endurance and stamina. Also, I think one of the pleasures of being a distinguished musician is being able to read a piece of music for the first time and already having a good account of it. Having excellent sight reading skills also means the amount of time…

I understand that with this job comes great responsibility, and I am definitely ready for it! Being a member of the Woodland High School marching band for two years, I now have an idea of how to make band more attractive to everyone. Most importantly each member will understand that hard work does pays off. I love music. I never hesitate to sign up for any extracurricular band I can get into. I love being involved, I love growing as a musician. I also love marching band- it’s so challenging and so draining, but it’s such an amazing experience. I have a zealous enthusiasm for music and marching band that propels me forward, and can apply this to my role as drum major. Energetic leaders are much better than halfhearted ones.…

A leader is a person who represents the whole class and motivate them. I did not believe I was a leader. During my freshman and sophomore year of high school, I was a quiet spoken individual who listens to what others have to say. It was not that I did not have anything to say, but it was the fear of saying something wrong and others disregarding what I had to say. I did several presentations in high school that made speaking in front of people more easier. However, I was still the timid person who wanted desperately to break my shell but did not know how. A shocking moment had occurred when I had became secretary of Zonta Club. It was junior year and I was surprised to have been part of the leadership team. I was able to discuss my ideas and to speak with the members at ease. It was my breaking point. I was given a privilege to be part of something that made a change. I was not just the soft spoken person, but I was a leader…

Leadership can be considered in terms of power capacity and opportunity to give to others, the desire to get involved and take action to achieve a collective goal or achieve a common goal. This power derives an estimated authority, trust or reference mentor who cannot be decreed. Leadership is no way from a status, function or any degree of responsibility. It owes its existence to the recognition of others.…

    Servant Leadership

Before taking this class I had a very different idea about leadership. When I thought of leadership I thought of power and authority. I usually associated leadership with one gaining power not always out of respect but usually force or seniority of some sort. After reading Leadership On The Line and the many ideas and lessons it presented I found that leadership involves a lot more than previously thought. Also the speech we heard from the man about servant leadership brought forth new ideas on how to lead and how respect is a very important aspect of leadership.…

A month before the start of the school year, over 100 high school students show up early in the morning for 8 hours of practice every day. I’m not talking about the football team. I’m talking about the high school marching band. Each member will be at the school getting in shape, learning how to march, and practicing music for weeks, working to perfect an 8-minute show to perform in front of thousands of people. As a member of the Clear Falls High School band, I know how important marching band is to its members and the high school community. Marching bands across Texas are incredibly valuable not only for their members in high school and the school community but also for its members later in life.…

Being a leader is more than simply holding a leadership position or having the ability to lead. Everyone is capable of being a leader, but not everyone exercises his or her leadership abilities. Each person’s idea of leadership is different. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and being a member of the President’s Leadership Class has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership further than what it was two months ago. My personal philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example, taking initiative, and encouraging others.…

    Concert Essay

For this concert report I chose to go to a performance of student composers held at YUANZE UNIVERSITY auditorium in building 6. I chose this one because I wanted to see some of the talent that my peers have in the music realm, and also it was one of the only concerts I have been able to attend because of religious restrictions. It was impressive to hear pieces composed by students. I cannot imagine creating something as complex as a musical composition, much less actually performing it, so this aspect of the concert was particularly awe-inspiring. There was a large attendance, and I think that much of the audience consisted of friends of the performers and some of the university students. I went with two friends, who weren’t so eager to go; I had to convince them by telling it would be interesting to see student performers/composers.…
