Ballpoint Pen
Ballpoint pen

Ballpoint pen is a pen that used nowadays, using a smooth rolling point of the tip in the pen. Unlike fountain pen, you don’t need to fill in ink for writing.

The first patent on a ballpoint pen was issued on 30 October 1888, to John Loud, a leather tanner, who was attempting to make a writing instrument that would be able to write on his leather products, which then-common fountain pens could not do.

In the period between 1904 and 1946, particularly alternatives or improvements to the fountain pen were invented. Slavoljub Eduard Penkala invented a solid-ink fountain pen in 1907, a German inventor named Baum took out a ballpoint patent in 1910, and yet another ballpoint pen device was patented by Van Vechten Riesburg in 1916. In these inventions, the ink was placed in a thin tube whose end was blocked by a tiny ball, held so that it could not slip into the tube or fall out of the pen. The ink clung to the ball, which spun as the pen was drawn across the paper. These proto-ballpoints did not deliver the ink evenly. If the ball socket were too tight, the ink did not reach the paper. If it were too loose, ink flowed past the tip, leaking or making smears. Many inventors tried to fix these problems, but without commercial success.

The principle of ballpoint pen is under the dual role of atmospheric pressure and ink gravity, the ink goes through the pipeline to seat beads, it would adhesion on the ball. When you write on paper, the ink would appear from the ball which is rolling. The ink by the downward force of gravity, and friction on the paper by rolling ball, the pressure of the pen using the ink tube of the air out, you can resume writing function.
You can see the tip has a diameter of about 0.1cm of the “small ball”, which is made by an alloy of chrome and steel. Also, a pen has the air inside that will cause the ink inside the pressure bar.

For my science fair project, I figured out what solvent would work best to erase permanent marker. The solvents I tested were: lemon juice, vinegar, water, and rubbing alcohol. I tried each of these solvents on a permanent marker line on plastic, paper, fabric, and wood. In this research paper, I will be talking about what a permanent marker is, how they are made, why they work so well, what rubbing alcohol is and its common uses, what vinegar is and its common uses, what water is and why water is so essential, and what exactly lemon juice is. I will also be talking about how plastic is made, how fabric is made, how wood is made, and how paper is made. A permanent marker is a type of writing utensil that is used to create permanent lines on almost any surface. The ink of a permanent marker is water resistant, contains propanol, butanol, diacetone alcohol, and different dye colorings, and can vary between all colors from black to yellow. The process of creating a Sharpie permanent marker is not very long or complicated. First, the barrel of the marker is molded out of a plastic resin. Screen printing is added to the barrel, including information such as the description of the color of the ink and the Sharpie logo. A filament made out of cotton material is used to hold in the ink as it is inserted into the barrel. A needle is used to inject the permanent ink from the opposite end of the barrel. Then the writing tip is applied. The cap is placed on the Sharpie marker and the permanent ink is slowly absorbed into the tip of the marker. The Sharpie is the most popular permanent marker company worldwide. The brand “Sharpie” was founded in 1857 and sold ink and glue. Any permanent marker’s ink must contain three ingredients to work. These ingredients are colorant, carrier, and resin. The colorant is what gives the ink its color. Colorants in permanent markers are often pigments, instead of dyes, because pigments fade less easily and do not bleed through paper. Dyes are…

In the late 1980s, early pen computer systems generated a large amount of excitement, and there was a time when experts thought pen computers eventually may replace conventional computers with keyboards. As envisioned in the 1980s, pen computers design was around handwriting recognition. In the early 1980s, experts thought handwriting recognition was going to be important with future technology. Nobel Prize winner Dr. Charles Elbaum started Nestor and developed the NestorWriter handwriting recognizer. Communication Intelligence Corporation created the Hand writer recognition system, and there were many others.…

Commercial inks used today on our pens and printers as we know are simple but little we know about it is that it has complete compositions. Pen inks that were used in the early times were iron gall inks, but because of its corrosive effect on paper, its component were changed and here they are a little amount of phosphoric acid ester, imidazoline-type activator, polytyethylenealkylamine, polyotyethylent, alkylame and alkylalkanolamide. But these are not the only substances that can be found in pen inks, there may be toluene and xylene, and other heavy metal compounds which may cause skin irritating, nauseas, blurred visions, dizziness and drowsiness. These substances are also non-renewable oils.…
