THE IMPORTANCE OF BALANCE DIET

Good health is fundamental to leading a full and active life and getting the right nutrition is an important step towards good health. Diet consists of the food a person eats which provides energy and nourishment to live and enjoy life. Everyone needs a well balanced diet including plenty of roughage and fluids, enough of the various vitamins and minerals,appropriate proportions of proteins, carbohydrates and fats and an appropriate number of calories for size and energy expenditure.

Dietary requirements include: Fibre- include plenty of fruits,vegetables and other foods rich in fibre Fish- add oily fish such as sardines and mackerel to diet Less saturated fat- choose white meat in preference to to red meat Less salt and sugar- avoid eating very salty or very Sugary foods

As a carer we have to know our clients like the food they like,aware if they are restricted to certain foods e.g. allergy to foods,restricted to,too much sugars or fatty foods because they are suffering from diabetes or heart illness.
Our main role as a carer is to read carefully the needs of the client and inform the kitchen or chef about the client, give complete name of the client and room number. The foods she likes and what foods to avoid, to avoid any arising problem. We have to know the importance of balance diet wherein we have to eat or served the right amount of food from all the food groups.

The benefits of balance diet are numerous.The right amount of vitamins and nutrients can increase life expentancy, by keeping the heart and body healthy, thereby preventing many long term illness. Sign and symptoms which individuals may experience prior to, during and following eating and drinking are; sudden and unexpected reactions to food and drink, such as choking, vomiting,
