Baking Soda Rocket
When you mix vinegar and baking soda you get a chemical change. The chemical property that causes this is called reactivity. Baking soda’s chemical formula is NaHCO3 and it’s a compound. Vinegar’s chemical formula is CH3COOH and it’s a compound. The problem of this is how much baking soda, added to 10mL of vinegar, will cause a film canister rocket to shoot the furthest. I think 5mL will shoot the farthest because there will be more for the baking soda build up in the canister. The independent variable is the amount of baking soda. The dependent variable is how far the rocket launches.

The first time we shot the rocket we got 0cm because our cap wouldn’t go on the film canister. The second time we shot the rocket we got 633cm and our cap went farther because we got a different cap and got it on quicker. For our third attempt we got 270cm and the reason why we got 270cm was because it was my first time going to shoot the rocket. Our total average for trial A was 301cm. I shot 5mL of baking soda rocket three times. The first time we shot the rocket we got 568cm this time we had a better film canister and a cap or it so it went farther. The second time we shot our rocket we got 191cm the reason why we got so low is because our lid wouldn’t pop off. For our third attempt we got 500cm and we hit the ceiling. For our total average trial B of shooting rockets was 419cm. For our last time of baking soda and vinegar rockets we did 7mL of baking soda and shot three times. The first time we shot we got 368cm and hit the ceiling. The second time we shot we got 260cm and it went slow and fast all at the same time. For our third attempt we got 500cm and for the very last time we got to shoot and went really far. For our average of trial C we got 376cm.

    The rocket I produced was a normal looking rocket compared to the group of rockets I was working with. It was medium size in length and thickness.     What I learned about bottle rockets is the smaller the bottles, the higher the rocket goes. The rocket has to have water on the bottom for it to fly. What I did for my rocket is I got two 2 liter bottles. I cut part of the bottom off one of the bottles and taped them together. But, you have to make sure it’s not sideways.     A successful part of it was that the structure was built strong enough to stay intact after launching play dough multiple times in a row. A failure aspect of it was that it does not launch the play dough as far as we would want it to, it launches the play dough consistently a little over the minimum requirement of 2 meters. After seeing our catapult perform, we would not change our design for multiple reasons.
