The Problem and Objective: Stain removers in the market today have multiple health hazards that could endanger our health. Dangerous chemicals can cause irritation, health problems, dangerous fumes and other complications. The group aims to find a new alternative material for the removal of stains. The group also aims to find a cheaper alternative to other stain removers in the market through the use of easy to find ingredients at home. The main stain that will be focused on is Grease which is common in the field of Engineering.

The main objective for the ERD is to create a stain remover for Grease.

The Goal of this ERD is to create a cheap alternative for stain removers in the field of Engineering. The main contaminant we will focus on is grease or oil which is common in machines as a lubricant. The group will focus on using Sodium Bicarbonate or Baking Soda and Oyster. Both of these materials have proven to be effective stain removers with vinegar being 8% acetic acid diluted in water. The group plans on mixing the two ingredients to create a cleaning agent capable of removing grease or oil stains. It will be used for stains found in cloth. Sodium Bicarbonate is also used as a deodorant and can remove odours. It is also used as a replacement for softener when washing clothes with detergent. It is a weak base with a pH of 8.7.

The main materials we will use for the experiment are:

Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)
Vinegar
Water
Oil

All 3 cleaners were exposed to BTB and Phenolphthalein to determine if the cleaners were acidic or basic. All 3 cleaners were greenish bluish showing that they are neutral. I am confident that this is so that the products are not liable for any skin irritation or pet/child danger from these products.…

Chlorine bleaches are made by dissolving chlorine in sodium hydroxide solution. They have a number of uses as they are used to remove colors, whiten or disinfectant via oxidation. Many bleaches have strong bactericidal properties, and are used for disinfecting and sterilizing as they contain chlorate ions. Sodium Thiosulphate is used in the pH testing of bleach substances as it neutralizes the color-removing effect of the bleach and makes it feasible to test the pH of the bleach solution.…

In 1728, the first bleaching company was founded by Scottish using crofting technique. They soaked the fabrics in a lye solution and washed them in water. After this, the fabrics were spread out in a large field for around two weeks. This process was replicated six times in order for fabrics to be whitened enough. “This method was repetitive, arduous, and took over large area of lands which could have been used for other purposes such as farming (Duncan).” In early 18th century, Karl Wilhelm Scheele, Swedish Chemist, discovered a highly reactive and greenish yellow gaseous halogen element and named it Chlorine. Later on, in 1785, Claude Berthollet, French Scientist, found the advantage of Chlorine; it was the most effective whitening agent (Morrison). He also invented the new hypochlorite bleach. It was consisted of soda ash which had soaked up Chlorine gas and named after the town where it was contrived, “Eau de Javelle” (Wagnall). During the Industrial Revolution, people produced the bleaching powder using lime. “They treated lime with water, spread them all over a large room, and pumped the chlorine gas into the room to be soaked up by the lime (Morrison).” It was used until liquid chlorine and sodium hypochlorite solutions were invented around World War…
