Should parents be allowed to choose certain genetic traits for their baby? Science has created the possibility of parents being able to design how their child will look to create the perfect ideal baby. Parents should not be able to choose the traits for their babies. Babies should look and be their own way not how their parents want them to be. Being different can lead to innovation and critical thinking. There will always be attributes of people that we aspire to have, but people can’t focus so intently on these attributes that we neglect what we have to offer. We are all 99.9% alike but it’s the .1% is what makes us different from everyone else. If parents choose exactly what they want their child to be like, the individualism of each kid is lost. The kids won’t be allowed to grow up to be the people they were meant to if their genetics are manipulated by their parents.

Procedures such as artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization are procedures that are very expensive. The most accurate sex-selection methods are the most expensive (tens of thousands of dollars) and often mean you have to undergo invasive infertility treatments and take fertility drugs with potential side effects. If the majority of children are born in the lab, what will be the social status of those born through sex? Will insurance companies refuse to cover cancer treatments for children whose parents did not invest in customization? What will economic competition look like between two baby customization companies? Will we be offered “basic” models and then expensive genetic upgrades? “If you want a child who plays the violin and can run like Usain Bolt, that will be an extra $50,000.” The only families who could afford these procedures are the families who are very wealthy.
