Leadership and Management Styles

In today’s workplace, it has become increasingly important to develop leadership and management styles which are effective and productive. Leadership is finding a balance between getting the job done and working well with others. Additionally, excellent leadership depends upon establishing a management style which yields the best results in any given circumstance. The definition of leadership varies upon the situation; however, great productivity begins with good leadership and management styles. In this paper, I will define and discuss the meaning of leadership, identify the different types of management styles and identify the benefits and/or drawbacks to each.

In this style, “the leader sets high standards for performance. He or she is obsessive about doing things better and faster, and asks the same of everyone” (Leadership Styles-Management 2014). This is most effective when the staff is self-motivated and highly skilled, able to embrace new projects and move with great speed, and when action is the keyword and excellent results are critical. The drawback to this type of leadership is that the pace cannot be sustained for too long and the staff runs the risk of burn out trying to keep up with the demands Because team members may feel overwhelmed by the pacesetter’s demand for excellence “work becomes a matter of doing one’s best along a clear course so much as second-guessing what the leader wants. At the same time, people often feel that the pacesetter doesn’t trust them to work in their own way or to take initiative. Flexibility and responsibility evaporate; work becomes so task focused and routinized it’s boring” Goleman

Nonetheless, each leadership style can prove effective when applied in the appropriate context. The role of an effective leader is to adopt the style that fits best with his team dynamics (Cutajar, 2012).” But many leaders tend to use and abuse these leadership styles to their best advantage, with any regard for others, former CEO of Home Depot Robert Nardelli is a great example.
