The amount of stress Geneva Birdsong was under during the war is hard to imagine. Being a mother did not come natural to her, and it became evident. Being in a failing marriage, raising a child, and watching her health diminish at a rapid rate was something Geneva couldn't handle. Fortunately, Renny was able to be there for Saranell as much as he could. Although Geneva might have been able to handle small situations better, motherhood was not an easy task. After living a lie for so long, Geneva Birdsong was not equipped to be a proper mother to Saranell.…

The goal of the artist was that the king must be followed, protected, and respected; He met this goal by giving the bull a large overpowering frightening look in order to prove the power of the king to those who would think to offend the king. The Colossal Bull Head is an incredibly large detailed piece that was used in the Reigns of Xerxes and Artaxerxes I; 486-424 B.C. This was found in the Hundred-Column Hall at Persepolis. This highly polished stone was discovered lying near the body sculpture it was made for. Bull was meant to be a guardian for the entrance of a Persian king’s throne room. This guardian also hold some religious aspects as the horns that were probably made for the bull was meant for gods and high rulers. Different bulls were made for different kings. A bull was a common animal to show the power of the king, and this statue symbolizes as the presence of the king.…

    Soto Onomatopoeia

    • 459 Words
    • 2 Pages

Moreover, Soto uses onomatopoeia in his biographical narrative in order to show his audience that he was given many opportunities to realise that he’s making a great error in judgement but, by the time he realised it the deed was done. To elaborate, before Soto went to the German Market, he had been listening to the howling of the plumbing underneath his house but, he had completely forgot about it and because of that fact he ended up committing a sin. This is shown when in the text it states,“Forgetting the flowery dust priests give off, the shadow of angels and the proximity of God howling in the plumbing underneath the house” (Soto 1). This quote shows in the back of Soto’s head he knew that stealing this pie was a bad idea but, no matter how hard that voice tried to reach him it couldn’t make it in time. In addition to this fact, the onomatopoeia of this quote is shown when it states,“God howling in the plumbing underneath the house”, this represents how God is calling out to Soto, trying to pull him back from his trance but, no matter how loud he cries his voice is out of reach. Furthermore, only after Soto finally realises the sin that he had committed does he hear the voice that had been trying…

We’ve allowed a natural approach to language instruction to dominate our schools, hoping our English learners
“will just figure it out.” (SCOE, 2009) This approach suggested by Kevin Clark proposes that teachers explicitly teach ELL by giving them a set of skills. Teacher will have to teach students not just vocabulary, but the sound system of language, the words and their word parts and meanings, and also rules for structuring sentences grammatically. Teaching students from this perspective can support a deeper understanding of the language. When the concept is thoroughly supported by background knowledge, explanation as to why, activities that strengthen skills, and consistency in lesson structure that follows this pattern, students are more likely to understand the concept and create a platform from which to launch higher level thinking and conclusions on following concepts and content area. Students learn more efficiently when they have prior knowledge on a presented concept. If the student can link content to a concept that they gained from previous knowledge on from their own unique background or culture, it will inevitably spark interest in that subject area. By sparking interest the teacher is now adding value to the lesson. Since students synonymize interest with value, the teacher would prove effective. Now a sense of purpose has now been infused into the lesson, and the student/students may begin to contribute more. (NCREL, 1990)…

The tones between the " Song of the Open Road" and "Thanatopsis are quite different. In the " Song of the Open Road", the tone is tranquil and stress-free. In which the poem specifies on how people need to get outside into nature to be free from difficult obstacles they face in their everyday lives. However, in "Thanatopsis", the tone starts off as sad and miserable to reassuring about the concept of death. Since, people often are afraid to leave the Earth at any moment, they should go out into nature and hear its voice to know that when they die, they will not be alone and they will mix back into the…

Foster’s article focuses on the myriad of intonation challenges caused by concert band instrumentation. The Outcasts of Poker Flat is a well-written short story. It tells the story of the few “immorals” who have been exiled from the town of Poker Flat and their journey. Throughout the story, characters come and go, they discover new things, and mostly change their ways for the better. The first exile is Mr. John Oakhurst, the protagonist and a known gambler who is being removed due to his success in the town’s casino. On his way out of town, “The Duchess”, a saloon girl; “Mother Shipton”, a madam; and “Uncle Billy”, the town drunk and a suspected robber joins him. Their personalities and emotions are skewed and somewhat undesirable in the beginning. However, as the story progresses, their ways change for the better. They start as the bunch…

“Man is named only to be forgotten and there’s never a heart that doesn’t change”(Mahfouz 284). The ending of Midaq Alley by Naguib Mahfouz is successful in concluding the novel by using tone and irony in the ending of relationships. Throughout the novel there is a negative tone that is emphasis in the end of the novel through the actions that take place. The actions that take place at the end of the novel also are ironic, such as the death of Abbas and Hamida’s situation. Mahfouz ends the end of the novel through actions with negative tone and irony with characters and their negative relationships. The end of the novel successfully connects with the rest of the novel and keeps the negative tone while using irony to end the relationship between Abbas and Hamida.…
