Avatar Summary
Avatar Review Avatar is a clear example of imperialism, which has occurred throughout history immensely. There are many times in history were natives of a country have been imperialized by a foreign country for their lands resources, this occurred in Avatar as well. For example when the Native Americans were imperialized by European countries. Also when Africa was imperialized by Britian. They were taken over for their lands' resources, without recognition of how the natives felt. Avatar's imperialism in the movie and the world's history of imperialism have many similarities. Avatar is about an paraplegic Marine Jake Sully who decides to take on a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge's intentions of driving off the native humanoid "Na'vi" in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers Intel for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na'vi people with the use of an "avatar" identity. Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful Na'vi Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora. Native Americans have been imperialized by European. Like Avatar, European countries imperialized north America because its newly founded resources, which they were in need of. They took over through force with their advance technologies and diseases, which decimated the native population. Without even thinking of native population they were driven to gain the newly found rich resources. Through the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus in 1492, they realized the resources of Americas and is why they began to imperialize. Like in Avatar, the

For this assignment, the movie I decided to watch was called ‘Avatar’. This movie is about humans, or “sky people”, travelling to the planet Pandora to conduct studies over the natives that live on the planet, and to gain resources that the planet provides. The natives on Pandora are called the Na’vi, and they are blue creatures who are much different than humans. One of the humans that travelled to Pandora to study the Na’vi is named Jake Sully. Jake is a paralyzed ex-marine who decided to travel to the planet after his twin brother passed away. He came to be in the program where he takes the body of an avatar, so that he can learn more about the people on the planet. The air on Pandora is poisonous to the sky people, so they have to use the…

The United States took possession of numerous Indians lands after the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. They claimed those lands of America using the Christendom’s theory stating that Christian’s nations have an absolute domination over non-Christians territories. Plenty of Acts and Treaties were also used to whitewash this doctrine of domination; the Indian Removal Act in 1835well illustrates this “whitewash” practice. Originally intended to create pace and to ensure the integrity of Indians territories, the Removal Act created multiple conflicts in between Indians and Christian’s communities and resulted in the removal of the Indians people from their own homeland, as a result of the Americans ‘desire to conquer the Indians territories. Furthermore, the United States categorized the Indian people as “domestic dependent nations” and also as “migratory hunters” with no attachment to their homelands, therefore the lands of America were supposedly uninhabited and available for Christians ‘nations to govern.…

It seems that the Native American people have faced a tremendous journey throughout history. When Christopher Columbus first came into contact with the Native Americans, he described them in such a positive manor. Upon meeting the Native Americans (Indians) Christopher Columbus recorded and entry into his log. “They ... brought us parrots and balls of cotton and spears and many other things, which they exchanged for the glass beads and hawks ' bells. They willingly traded everything they owned... . They were well-built, with good bodies and handsome features.... They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. They have no iron. Their spears are made of cane.... They would make fine servants.... With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.” (Log of Christopher Columbus) Although it seemed that the Native Americans were thought of as hospitable and generous, the Europeans took full advantage and became greedy over many things including land. Settlers brought diseases to the Native Americans and most of the disease…

In the late 1800’s/early 1900’s, the Europeans were of the most powerful nations in the world; the British, French, and Dutch. They had industries and resources, among other things, such as a strong military, guns, and things other nations did not have. Things that made it easier to conquer other nations. Europeans established overseas colonies in places like Asia, India, and Africa. They established them to get to their resources and also to have a place to sell their goods. Britain wanted India so they could sell their goods there and take India’s cotton. They thought if they didn’t take advantage of the opportunity, someone else would. Throughout the 1800’s, the United Stated expanded westward. Mexicans and Native Americans lost their land as a result. In most ways, imperialism was justified.…

Like many countries who have been invaded by a foreign power, Native Americans are also regarded to have been subjected to significant change. When the Europeans first arrived in the late 1400s, they brought with them the intent of not only exploring to find India, but also to find gold and much more wealth. The Europeans made a mistake in their navigation causing them not to arrive in India, but rather what they referred to as the “New World.” The Europeans had stumbled upon the Native Peoples that occupied that place. The Native Peoples were soon to become overpowered and eventually become slaves of the Europeans. With the Europeans now being part of the Native world, they eventually left a significant impact, an impact that affected them influentially, ethnocentrically, and population-wise.…

However The American Empire was such a novel sounding thing prior to the Spanish-American War. It was this war that almost certainly started America down the road of imperialism and colonialism. The imperialism in this sense is the control of foreign countries and peoples and not necessarily the lands of Native Americans. This distinction must be made otherwise since the end of the Revolution and the founding of the country could be a tale of imperialism. What with Manifest Destiny and the Monroe Doctrine.…

The most prevalent theme in the film is globalization. This connection between AVATAR and anthropology can be found from the very beginning. The humans in the movie leave earth and travel to Pandora to mine the planet just as the pilgrims and other settlers left Europe to go to the Americas in search of new homes and other matter. Humans bring to Pandora their traditions and values and to them the natives are different and demure. In our somewhat similar history; globalization led European ideals, and later US ideals, to be imposed on the native cultures with little regard for the local people and their customs. You see this in Avatar with the humans trying to force their will on the Na'vi and how they don't care about the existence of a real Mother Nature, the power of their magical forest, and how what they are doing is going to destroy the Na’vi…
