Avatar response paper
Madeline Ferris
“Avatar”
Read to respond:
When Avatar was released in 2009, it was during the time that the world had this mass idea that the world as we know it was going to be destroyed on December 21, 2012. Even though the world never ended on that particular date, our generation is still hung up on the idea. The idea has changed since 2009; now the idea is that the world we be infected with a zombie-like virus, so then will begin the apocalypse. But is it really a date predicted thousands of years ago, or a zombie virus that is going to end our world, or is it humanity itself that is killing our planet?
Avatar tried showing us that humans could potentially be the ones that kill our world. However, instead of destroying our own planet, Avatar shows how we could let our greed and hatefulness destroy another world, Pandora. We are hateful, greedy, and stubborn, but we are loving, kind, and giving, and it’s up to us to decide which of those qualities in ourselves we want to release to the world. In Avatar, those characters that let their kindness show were the ones that saved us. If all of us could only be these loving people, we wouldn’t have wars, or famine, or greed. We are not perfect, and we should never try to be perfect, but letting ourselves become monsters who do not care or love will destroy us.
In Berardinelli’s review he explains how Cameron made such a simple story have so much emotion and realization within. He incorporates love, war, death, and many other things into both the human and Na’vi world, something that we all know so much about. The main characters Jake and Dr. Grace realize how greedy Parker Selfridge is and how hateful Colonel Quaritch is. Parker, who is only involved for the money, is part of the main reasons the war began between the humans and Na’vi. The Second part was because of Quaritch, who thinks he is bigger than life. Jake and Dr. Grace are the ones that team up with the Na’vi to help save what they could of the Pandora

In conclusion, the different connections the characters have together makes the novel even more powerful than it already is. The film was about in allegory for the war on terror of how America interrupted the peaceful lives of Na’vi and completely destroyed it for selfish reasons.James Cameron (Director) is telling the citizens of those countries to rebel against the Marines and kill all the Na’vi. Cameron is saying that every middle eastern should start a war against the American imperialist that don’t care about lives as much as they do. The film is not anti-war and it is anti-violence. The film was trying to state an anti-violent message in the climax of the movie when after all the Na’vi are shot, and the only survivor is Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), and those robot machines keep shooting and destroying the scenery. When they destroy the tree the same technique is…

Smiley Smile is the twelfth studio album by the American rock band the Beach Boys. It was released on September 18, 1967 and managed to reach number nine on the UK record charts. In the US however, it was not perceived as well and only managed to reach spot forty-one. The CD comes off weak compared to the album Smile, which was a much more well-constructed LP that was never released by the Beach Boys. Smiley Smile took a lot of its inspiration from Smile, the most notable change being that four pre-existing songs from smile were taken to Smiley smile with significantly scaled down arrangements. This however does not make Smiley Smile a bad CD. There are many elements to Smiley Smile that made it an album that stood out for its time such as its Lo-fi…

The movie also focuses on the blood that is spread to receive a diamond. The main cause of war in Sierra Leone. The book barely sheds light on the root of the war. The upside of this is the viewer can comprehend the challenges and mentality of the character. The advantage of this is that the viewer can understand the difficulties and mindset of the character. The drawback is it just spotlights on the individual contemplations instead of others leaving space for sentiments.…

“The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference.” This quote by Elie Wiesel says a lot. Indifference is dangerous. We have a moral responsibility to help others most of the time. There are moments where it’s okay to be indifferent. This moral responsibility that we have is important to keep our indifference in check. We have a moral responsibility to help right the wrongs in the world but to an extent.…

In 1968, a article was published by a man named H.J. McCloskey called “On Being an Atheist”, in which an attempt to present arguments against the existence of God is made. In his work, McCloskey attempts to provide readers with the argument that atheism is more “reasonable and comfortable (McCloskey,1968)” compared to the alternative theistic view. In his article, McCloskey attempts to make arguments against the three typical theistic proofs of God which includes the cosmological and teleological arguments, along with the argument from design. McCloskey uses the existence of evil and the irrationalness off faith against the theistic view of God. At the beginning of the article it seems that an intriguing argument will be made regarding the theistic view point of God, yet as McCloskey continues the argument becomes more biased in attacking spiritual beliefs which questions his validity.…

The passage that I am looking at from 41-60 and after reading it over and over I find that it is a little tough for me to process, which I hope is normal considering that people don’t talk like this and I don’t read much so I am not ready for this kind of dialect. But for the sake of this paper I shall try and dissect it using one of the three qualities. I am going to tackle the religion one, I am not religious in any sense so I think it would be interesting for me to talk about the text and asking myself if religion is a good source of creativity and relate it to the reading.…

James Cameron’s AVATAR is an epic science fiction action drama movie. This film, even though it is a fantasy, contains so many scenarios that can apply to modern or past societies. The story revolves around Jake Scully in his journey as an anthropologist/ body guard in the world of Pandora, and how he experiences first hand a lot of the anthropology themes and terms we have discussed in class. The story starts off in 2154 when humans have depleted the Earth from its natural resources. A company called the RDA mines for a valuable mineral that powers equipment and has several other uses found a planet containing a large amount of this mineral. This planet is named Pandora. Pandora is a densely forested planet habited by several creatures, most importantly by the Na'vi, 10-foot tall, blue-skinned, sapient humanoids who live in harmony with nature and worship the planet itself. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the existence of the Na’vi culture and land, and this is what the whole movie is about. The most prevalent anthropological themes and ideas found in the film AVATAR are globalization and spirituality.…

For “if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” When Albert Einstein said those words he described the situation of nearly every adolescent in our society today. We are only keeping others from reaching their dreams. I’m sure we all have had little kid dreams; I wanted to slay dragons. However as you grow up the dreams die down. Not because you forgot them, but because you realized they wouldn’t happen. The dragons win. I’m not crazy- dragons are real in a sense. They are giant problems and everyone wants them gone, correct? Well aren’t there giant problems in the world? Don’t most people want to be rid of these issues? We must all work together to slay the metaphorical dragons, as Dr.King slayed them for his dream. We can change the world. We can slay the dragons. It was a lesson I learned as a child, and a lesson I have carried with me to adolescence- “you are who you choose to be.” I dream that we all choose to perceive others positively, truthfully, and justly, so that we may lessen the hurt we bring to this…

In the last century the world has been predicted to end 9 times. These dates include: 1910, 1914, 1936, 1982, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2011, and of course 2012. Signs that “the end is near” are everywhere! They can be seen in the hundreds of doomsday websites, shows on The History Channel, and the ever so credible Hollywood film “2012”. Aside from the media influence, there are also “historical” and “scientific” theories that support the end of the world, none of which are very credible. The theories of 2012olgy and the end of the world include predictions from the Maya calendar, solar flares, Planet X, polar shift, and galactic alignment.…

    Humans Are Naturally Evil

    • 451 Words
    • 2 Pages

People are generally evil. When humans are children, they want all the attention and affection without having to share it. When they see their mother carrying another child, whether that child is a sibling or a complete stranger, most children will stop what they're doing and run over and start crying until they are lifted up and shown the attention that the other child had. Humans show signs of envy, jealousy and selfishness, starting at very early stages in their lives, sometimes before they are taught to talk or walk. It isn't until those children grow into toddlers or sometimes even older, that they are taught to be good. They are taught that it isn't okay to abuse or steal. They're taught to always say “please” and “thank you” and that when they see someone in need, they should help them. When in school, children are taught to play nice, they are taught patience, just because it is a virtue, that doesn't mean humans are born with it. If humans were naturally good, there would be no war, no genocide, no murderers. The world would be a peaceful place. However, as advertised on all newspapers; war, genocide, murder, and other acts of selfishness surround the world, if not consume it. There are people who know nothing but war, they aren't familiar with a world without death or explosions. Humans aren't taught to kill, it's per-programed into their minds, there isn't someone or something that “teaches” them to kill, they just know. Another example is how humans love to see others in pain, they don't like it when someone is doing better than them, that's why there are bullies in the world. Humans are naturally envious, jealous and manipulative. There are hundreds of television shows that are nothing but 30minutes of watching people falling and getting hit in the face. Humans find other humans peoples' pain…
